Royals Hall of Fame
Marissa Hudley is the fourth women’s basketball player to be inducted into the Queens Athletics Hall of Fame. The Charlotte, North Carolina native played all four seasons of her career with the Royals totaling 1,825 points, 987 rebounds, 165 steals, 122 assists, and 103 blocks. Over the course of four years, she averaged 16 points per game helping the Royals record some of their most successful seasons in recent history. During the 2009-10 season, Queens finished the year at 18-12 after falling in the conference championship game. It was also the first and only time in program history that the Royals had reached the conference tournament championship game. In total, Hudley led the Royals to three conference tournament appearances as the Royals reached the quarterfinals in 2009 and the semifinals in 2011.
Hudley’s individual awards include her being named Conference Carolinas Freshman of the Year in 2008. The four-time Conference Carolinas All-Conference Team honoree was recognized on the first team three times and the All-Tournament Team twice. Hudley was also honored three times on the North Carolina Collegiate Sports Information Association’s All-State Team, once on the Daktronics NCAA Division II Women’s Basketball All-Southeast Region Second Team, and once on the CoSIDA/Capital One Academic All-District Team. She also has numerous conference player of the week and Queens student-athlete of the month recognitions. At the culmination of her career, she was named Queens’ Most Outstanding Senior Female Athlete.
Hudley left her mark in the Queens record books as she holds the Queens career records in points and rebounds. She leads in field goals made and games played as well, and completed the 2010-11 season ranked 14th nationally in rebounds per game as she averaged a double-double in her senior season with 17 points and 11 rebounds per game.
Upon graduation, Hudley joined the Union County Sheriff’s Office as a detention officer in March of 2012. During her two years in Union County, she attended the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office Detention Officer Certification Course for 10 weeks where she was named Valedictorian and Iron Woman (most physically fit). She also attended B.L.E.T. (Basic Law Enforcement Training) at South Piedmont Community College where she was named Valedictorian and became certified as a law enforcement officer in North Carolina. In 2014, Hudley went to the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office as a Deputy Sheriff and worked in Arrest Processing. During this time, she, along with 27 other deputies, was chosen to travel to Washington D.C. to help provide security for the Trump Inauguration in 2017. Later that year, Hudley was promoted to the rank of Sergeant. She was transferred to the Jail Division and soon after became Sergeant over the jail’s Direct Action Response Team (D.A.R.T.). A team made up of tactically trained detention officers who respond to emergency situations in the jail. In June of 2021, Hudley was promoted to the rank of Captain, making her the youngest Captain in the agency. She was transferred to the training division and is currently the training commander. Her duties include the management and oversight of all training for the entire agency. This includes but is not limited to; firearms, taser, yearly in-service training for our detention officers, deputies and telecommunicators, and our Detention Officer Certification Courses. In November 2021, Hudley completed instructor training and is now a certified general instructor.
