Queens University of Charlotte is pleased to announce the 2014 Royals Hall of Fame induction of legendary soccer coach Fred Norchi. Pacing the sidelines as a soccer coach at Queens for 22 seasons, Norchi created a dominant program in both the region and nation, and finished a celebrated career in 2010 with 246 career wins as the men’s coach and 306 wins with both programs.

During his historic tenure at Queens Norchi coached 10 All-Americans, was the conference Coach of the Year seven times, the Region Coach of the Year five times, and in the running for national coach of the year once. His remarkable career record of 246-102-25 was No. 17 all-time by winning percentage, and No. 10 all-time in wins when he retired. Today, Norchi’s record is No. 21 all-time by winning percentage, and No. 15 all-time in victories in NCAA Division II.

Norchi came to Queens in 1989 where he was tabbed with building the varsity women’s soccer program, and just one year later he did the same on the men’s side. Norchi continued to coach both teams with success until 1996, when he turned his focus solely to the men’s side.

Norchi finished with a career record of 60-45-5 as the head women’s coach. He led the Royals to conference regular season titles and conference tournament championship victories in 1995 and 1996. The titles in 1995 followed a perfect 10-0 record in conference play, and it was the Royals’ first season competing in the Carolinas Virginias Athletics Conference (CVAC).

Norchi’s men’s team finished the season ranked within the top 25 in the nation nine times in the ISAA/NSCAA Coaches Poll, with the highest ranking of No. 7 in 1999. The 1991 team completed the season with the national shutout record for all NCAA divisions, recording 14 clean sheets in the 17 game season. Additionally, his teams participated in the NCAA tournament five times, and reached the Elite 8 twice.

The Royals were also a force in conference play during Norchi’s time at Queens, as his squads won eight regular season championships and five conference tournament titles. Under his leadership 55 players were named all-conference or honorable mention, 32 were chosen as all-tournament team members, and four were tournament MVP selections. Additionally, three earned Freshman of the Year honors, four were tabbed Player of the Year, and 13 were named Players of the Week. Just as impressive was when the CVAC’s All-Time Team was chosen in 2006, six of Norchi’s players were named to the 10 man roster.

Prior to coaching at Queens, Norchi coached at Porter-Gaud School in Charleston, S.C. He accumulated a record of 169-79-19 while there, and helped his team capture the South Carolina State AAA Championship in 1981 and 1983. In 2010, Norchi was inducted into the Porter-Gaud School Athletics Hall of Fame.

Norchi is married to Leigh Haynes and is the proud parent of Matt, who graduated from the University of South Carolina with honors and is currently preparing for the LSAT.
