Royals Hall of Fame
Demetrius Donald, Michael Hensen, and Bruce Mottern are the first unit to be inducted into the Queens Athletics Hall of Fame, and they bring the total of men’s soccer players inducted to eight. The trio of Knoxville, Tennessee natives were a force on the field for Queens during their time as Royals leading the program to four consecutive CVAC Regular-Season Championships and two NCAA Championship appearances. In their four-year span, the Royals posted a 38-1-2 league record and a 59-11-6 overall record. In 2004, the Royals reached the Sweet 16 and their team scoring offense average ranked 18th nationally at 2.78 goals per game.
Mottern, a goalkeeper and two-year captain, completed his career with 20 shutouts and a 43-9-4 record in goal. He totaled 168 saves and finished with a .881 goals against average. The three-time all-conference team member and was named to the CVAC All-Tournament Team in 2003 after recording a nationally-seventh best .796 goals against average. In 2004, Mottern was named all-region and went on to earn first-team all-American honors after recording .859 GAA and ranking seventh nationally in shutouts with 10 which is the second most in a single season in Queens history. During that same year, the four-time CVAC Player of the Week saw 540 consecutive scoreless minutes in the net, and earned Queens’ Defensive MVP Award. In 2005, Mottern was one of two DII players recognized as Charlotte Observer’s Top 10 Soccer Players to Watch in the Carolinas. His saves, shutouts, and goals against average each rank top three all-time at Queens.

Mottern lives in Charlotte with his son, Asher. For the past decade, he has worked within the digital and mobile space for Bank of America and Wells Fargo. Currently, he is a consultant for Wells Fargo's Strategy Digital Innovation organization.

The trio has not lost its love for the beautiful game. This past December, they teamed up with other Queens alums and won the North Carolina Men's Over 30 State Championship. In June, the team will travel to Dallas, Texas to represent North Carolina in the Southeast Regional Championship. Mottern also won the North Carolina Men's Open State Championship in 2019 with Queens men's soccer alumni and current Queens men's soccer graduate assistants Alberto Morales ('18) and Omer Okyar ('18).
