Queens blanks Barton in regular season finale

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Queens University of Charlotte softball team hosted its final regular season game against Barton College today. Queens honored its two seniors, Keeya Turner (Fayetteville, N.C., 71st ) and Chantel Dodge (Shalimar, Fla., Choctawhatchee), before the game, and followed the festivities with two key wins to bring their record to 28-22 and 16-5 in conference.

Dodge took the circle in game one, and from the start she shut down Barton's offense with ease to help give Queens the 6-0 win.  She allowed only one hit in the game, and added seven strikeouts to her school record. She was aided in the field by a solid defense that was highlighted by a diving double play by catcher Brittany Harrell (Morganton, N.C., Freedom).

Whitney Britt (Gibson, N.C., Scotland) and Noemi Rodriguez (Miami, Fla., G. Holmes Braddock Senior ), who each went 3-4 in the game, led the white-hot Royals offense. The Royals bats especially caught fire in the fourth inning when they picked up five runs, including a two run home run by Kaitlyn Cheek (Richmond, Va., JR Tucker ) that landed in the pond far behind the outfield fence. On the bases the Royals stole six bases in the game with Britt picking up three steals, and Turner adding two.

In game two the offense started up where it left off from the earlier matchup. At the plate Turner led the way with three hits, while Megan Lathbury (Georgetown, Del., Sussex Central)  cranked a towering shot over the leftfield fence that helped give Queens the 6-0 win. The Royals picked up seven hits on the game, but more importantly displayed their ability to manufacture runs through excellent base running, bunting, and superb plate discipline.

In the circle it was freshman Jessica Scott (Franklin, N.C., Raban Gap Nacoochee) continuing her recent string of strong performances with complete game effort. Scott allowed only four hits, and struck out five Barton batters in her seven innings.

The Royals clinched the third seed in the conference tournament, and travel to Hartsville, S.C. to face King College in the opening round of play on Friday.
