Queens’ Seventh-Inning Rally Comes Up Short in Series Finale at West Georgia

OPENING PITCH
Scores: West Georgia 4, Queens 3
Records: Queens (14-34, 6-18 ASUN) | West Georgia (15-40, 7-17 ASUN)
Location: University Field (Carrollton, Ga.)

THE SHORT STORY
Queens erased an early deficit and battled until the final out, but West Georgia used a pivotal fifth inning to hold off the Royals, 4-3, on Friday afternoon in ASUN action. Queens outhit the Wolves 8-6 and brought the tying run aboard in the seventh, but a game-ending double play cut the comeback just short.

After West Georgia grabbed a 1-0 lead in the third, Queens responded in the fifth with two runs to move in front. Kami Diaz started the rally with a single before Sage Farmer reached on an error, and Lauren Byrd delivered an RBI single that also forced another West Georgia miscue to bring home the first run. Lindsay Henson followed with a sacrifice fly to score Farmer and give Queens a 2-1 edge.

West Georgia answered immediately in the bottom half, capitalizing on three hits, two walks and a Queens error to score three runs and retake control at 4-2. Queens kept pushing, cutting the deficit to one in the seventh when Farmer singled, moved to second on a groundout and scored on Olivia Thornton's RBI single. The Royals brought the tying run on base, but the Wolves turned a double play to seal the win.

BY THE NUMBERS

  • Queens finished with eight hits, led by the multi-hit effort from Kami Diaz (2-for-3)
  • Lauren Byrd added a hit and RBI, while Lindsay Henson drove in a run and reached base twice via walks.
  • Addison Kluck provided 2.0 scoreless relief innings, allowing just one hit.
POSTGAME COMMENTS FROM COACH ARMSTRONG
"This group has grown a lot, but they will carry this year into next season," Armstrong said. "They understand this is not a feeling they want to feel again!"
