Box Score 2 Brevard, N.C- The Queens University of Charlotte softball team walked away with a pair of wins after facing Brevard College in a double-header on Saturday, April 23, 2016. The Royals blanked the Tornados 6-0 in game one before doubling up in game two with a 12-6 victory. Queens would move to a 22-25 record on the year and 11-11 record in the South Atlantic Conference. Brevard dropped to 19-35 overall and 6-16 in league play.
The start of the first game opened with a two run lead from the Royals as
Taylor Rosenbalm and
Ashton Whitaker found home plate. Although the Royals would put runners on base, Queens only added one run through in the middle innings with
Samantha Martinez putting a run on the board thanks to a bunt from Whitaker.
Sitting with a 3-0 lead in the sixth inning,
Abby Lathan made clean contact with the ball to see it fly over the left field wall with
Taylor Cheek on base. The game closed with another run coming from Whitaker who rounded the bases off a double from
Lyndey McCurry.
McCurry (9-10) pitched all seven innings to take the win for the team as she kept the Tornados off the board, giving up just five hits.
Jamie Hrobak (16-24) suffered the loss as she pitched for the first 5.2 innings of play with 10 hits and five runs. Ricki Kuhn would come in as the relief pitcher seeing 1.1 innings of play with one hit and one run.
Queens built a strong lead in game two scoring runs in the first five innings while keeping Brevard away from home until their fifth at bat. Rosenbalm and McCurry tabbed runs in the first inning of play followed by a run from
Kayla Hall in inning two, giving the team a 3-0 start.
Solo inning runs from Martinez and Hall widen the game as Queens moved into its fifth at bat. The Royals would score four runs in the fifth inning as
Jasmyn Lindsay,
Elaina Frantellizzi, Cheek, and Lathan each crossed home plate creating a 10-0 deficit for Brevard to answer.
The Tornados finally broke through in the fifth inning placing four runs on the board before adding one more in the sixth, but a double from Rosenbalm found two scoring runners in Lathan and Hall to make it a 12-run game. Brevard would add one more run in the bottom of the seventh before Queens grabbed the final out.
Evie Scott (8-6) pitched through the first 4.1 innings to see seven hits and four runs.
Catelyn Presley would finish the game with 2.2 innings pitched tabbing seven hits and two runs.
Hrobak (16-25) would again suffer the loss, this time as the lone pitcher for the Tornados. She would tally 17 hits and 12 earned runs during the game.
Queens now awaits seeding for the South Atlantic Conference Tournament being held in Hartsville, S.C. Play will begin on April 28.
