Box Score CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Queens University of Charlotte welcomed No. 3 Lake Erie College to Dickson Field this afternoon defeating the Storm 9-8. With the win Queens closes the 2015 season with a 9-8 record. The Storm fall to 12-2 on the year.
Queens'
Garrett Chan,
Spencer Corkery,
Evan Farkas and
JT Thompson each scored two goals to lead the Royals offense. Farkas also totaled three assists, while Chan notched two.
Jonathan Paige won 15-of-20 face-offs to total eight ground balls.
Defensively,
Patrick Thomas led with two caused turnover and five ground balls, while
Justin Kestler had two caused turnovers and four ground balls. Goalkeeper
Eric Dolan recorded 18 saves and four ground balls in the win.
After Chan put the Royals ahead 1-0 with a man-up goal at 6:56 in the first, the Storm would respond with back-to-back scores to go up 2-1 with 4:04 on the clock. Queen's Thompson then tied the game up at 2-2 with another man-up goal at 1:46.
The Royals, ranked first in the country in man-up offense, continued to take advantage of Lake Erie's penalty situations in the second quarter when an illegal stick sent Mitchell Stokes to the sideline for three minutes. Queens went on to score four consecutive man-up goals to grab a 6-2 lead with 3:31 left to play in the second quarter. Lake Erie's Courtland Black-Araujo cut the Royals' lead to three, 6-3, with a goal at the end of the period.
Queens opened the second half with three unanswered goals to increase their lead to six, 9-3, with 11:05 on the clock. However, the Storm would match the home team with three goals of their own to cut the margin back down to three heading into the final 15 minutes of play.
The Royals, going scoreless in the fourth, held off the Storm's comeback efforts by holding them to just two late fourth quarter goals.
Lake Erie outshot Queens 46-28 putting 26 shots on goal compared to Queens' 15 shots on goal. The Storm also led in ground balls 36-30. Queens scored on 6-of-6 extra-man opportunities.
Reagan Harding led Lake Erie with three goals and one assist, while Connor Ward added two goals. Nicholas Simonetti took the loss in goal after totaling four saves.
