Box Score GAFFNEY, S.C. – The Queens University of Charlotte women's lacrosse team, ranked 14
th in the nation, traveled to take on No. 5 Limestone College this afternoon falling 5-4 to the Saints. The Royals now sit at 2-1 on the year after picking up their first loss of the season, while the Saints improve to 4-0 on the year.
After the Saints put two balls in the back of the net early in the second, the Royals trailed Limestone 5-2 until junior attacker
Maggie Masters scored her second goal of the day at 11:47 to bring Queens within two. Junior midfielder
Caity Hamilton assisted Masters on the score. Hamilton then earned a free-position shot with 8:45 left in regulation, and scored to cut the Saints lead to just one, 5-4.
Unfortunately for Queens, Hamilton's shot would be the last one of the day for Queens. Riddled with a pair of yellow cards in the minutes following Hamilton's goal, the Royals were unable to get a clear opportunity to tie the game. A turnover by the Saints recovered by Queens'
Jena Ready with 23 seconds to play would award the Royals their final chance to equalize things, but a stick check revealed illegal equipment forcing a turnover. Limestone then spent the final seconds of action playing keep away until the final horn sounded.
The Royals were outshot 19-6 today, but were much more efficient than the Saints scoring on 4-of-6 shots on goal. Limestone took the battle at the draw, 5-3, while the Royals edged the Saints in ground balls 23-22.
In the opening half of play, Masters and
Kelly Dowd netted back-to-back goals to give the Royals a 2-1 lead with 21:12 to play. Taylor Cline of Limestone answered with two consecutive scores for the Saints to help them take a 3-2 lead into the break.
Masters led the Royals with two goals today, while Hamilton totaled one goal and an assist. Dowd finished play with one goal, five ground balls, one draw control and one caused turnover.
Bridgette Larranaga led the Royals' defense with three caused turnovers and four ground balls as Queens held the Saints to their lowest point total this season. Goalkeeper
Danielle Horoschak also played a huge role in keeping Limestone's point total down recording 10 saves in the loss.
Sam McCarrick and Cline led the Saints with two goals apiece. Sydney Teeter took the win in goal after collecting two saves.
The Royals are back at home on Saturday at 1 p.m. as they welcome Coker College to Dickson Field.
