Box Score Charlotte, N.C. – Queens University of Charlotte women's basketball (4-8, 2-5 SAC) dominated the court against Coker College (7-6, 2-5 SAC) Wednesday, January 7, 2015, winning the game 60-50 to put the team on a three game streak.
Karleasha Thompson's performance in the game would earn her two career highs as she reached 14 points and eight rebounds.
McKell Oliverio and
Lacey Singletary climbed the charts scoring double-digits with Oliverio leading the team with 17 points. Singletary tallied 13 points adding to a strong offensive game. Singletary and Thompson would equal to lead the team in rebounds against the Cobras with eight. Pettit added seven assists to the night with Thompson close behind at six.
Queens would find and maintain control of the game early in the first half with a 15-6 run. The team held the lead for the entirety of the first without giving away control. Oliverio would aid the Royals on the board scoring the first two points of the evening. Going on a 9-0 lead that saw two field goals from
Abby Pettit, the Royals found distance in the game pushing the Cobras into an 11-6 hole with 11 minutes left in the half. The Royals played aggressively throughout the half with Singletary putting up four points from under the basket as the teams broke for half with a 27-23 Royals lead.
The Royals started strong at the start of the second half with Thompson hitting a good three-pointer, increasing the Royals' lead to 30-27. This momentum would be short lived as the court began to heat up as the Royals defense struggled to stop the Cobras offense. Turnovers and miscues lead to a rise off the Cobras bench as they brought the game back to 33-30 with 15:37 left in the game. Queens would quickly regain their composure with the help of
Nikki Gleason as her jumper found the tie at 37-37. As the two teams fought for possession Queens found a late 6-1 run to bring the game inside of five minutes. With a 50-44 lead, the Royals' defense held Coker to just two baskets from the floor. The game was brought to a close with Queens grabbing its second conference victory with a 60-50 score.
Tanesha Stenson knocked down 12 points for the Cobras offense as the only player to reach into double-digits. Priscilla Fenty found 11 rebounds for Coker but the team would be unable to capitalize. The team had a 27.4 field-goal percentage for the game making 17 of 62 attempts.
Queens will travel to Jefferson City, Tennessee to battle against the 12-1 (6-1 SAC) Carson-Newman College this Saturday as the Royals look to continue their three game winning streak.
