Box Score CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Queens University of Charlotte women's basketball team hosted Catawba College (15-12, 11-10 SAC) in Curry Arena this evening falling 56-46 to the Indians. The Royals fall to 6-19 on the season and 5-16 in South Atlantic Conference play with the loss.
Senior forward
Shonice Pettaway led the Royals with 20 points, 9 rebounds, and 3 blocks, while
McKell Oliverio added 11 points on 5-of-7 shooting. Sophomore guard
Nikia Squire chipped in with eight points, and junior forward
Lacey Singletary totaled seven points and seven rebounds.
The Indians got off to an 11-4 start over the Royals 5:15 into the first half. Both teams would then go cold on the offensive end as the next basket wouldn't come until 12:51 when Chloe Bully of Catawba scored a layup to stretch her team's lead out to nine, 13-4. They would hold their largest lead of the period over Queens at 9:46 when a three-point play from Jada Huntley put the Indians ahead 18-8. Catawba controlled the game for the remainder of the half taking a 26-17 lead into the break.
Four quick points for Queens at the start of the second brought the home team to within five of the Indians, but Catawba would answer with seven straight growing their lead to 12 by 17:44. At 15:29, the Indians led by 13, which was their largest lead of the game. Queens would cut the Indians' down to seven with 4:26 to play on a pair of free-throws from Pettaway, but that's as close as they would get to Catawba before the end of regulation.
The Royals shot 54.5 percent from the floor in the second half, improving from their 25 percent first half clip. Queens was outscored 34-18 in the paint, but won the battle under the glass edging Catawba, 39-35, in rebounds.
Antionette McPhail led the Indians with 16 points, while Bully finished with 15 points.
The Royals close their season on Saturday at home against Anderson University at 6 p.m.
