Box Score Greenville, Tenn. –
McKell Oliverio made some noise for the Royals as the women's basketball team fell to Tusculum 72-58 on Saturday, December, 2014, knocking down 20 points in the game for the highest of any player this season as she made 10 of 16 attempts from the floor. Although Queens comprised several rallying runs, a late dry spell in the second half would be too much to overcome in the road loss.
Although the Royals took the first basket of the game with
Lacey Singletary finding an open lane, Tusculum found their answer keeping the lead out of the Royals reach for the remainder of the game. An early run from Tusculum that saw the Pioneer taking 10 unanswered points was ended by Oliverio who found the a clean look from outside the arch at 16:44 to give the game a 10-5 score. However, the Pioneers immediately answered with another run that resulted in the Royals staring at a 19-8 Tusculum lead with 12:20 left in the half. Although the start was slow, Queens united for a tying run that saw nine points from Oliverio with
Carmen Richardson and
Nikki Gleason make vital free-throws. Queens would force the game into a 25-25 tie with just four minutes remaining before break. The teams would part ways with Tusculum holding a 36-30 lead.
Singletary again started the Royals on offense making a basket in the paint followed by two free-throws (37-34). Queens would slowly chip away at the Pioneers lead with Oliverio making a basket to bring the Royals within four with still 15 minutes left to play (44-40). Momentum, however, shifted to Tusculum who controlled the next ten minutes of play slowly building into a 65-46 lead and creating a gap the Royals would be unable to overcome. Queens would end the match trailing 72-58.
Oliverio found support from
Abby Pettit who took six assists in the game with three steals.
Maggie Stewart also played a huge role in the game with seven total rebounds tying Oliverio for the team's category lead. Stewart also put up 11 points to follow-up as the team's second leading scorer. Queens made 16-23 free-throws to shoot a 69.6% from the line.
Shynese Whitener netted 20 points for the Pioneers with five steals leading the team on the floor. Maelyn Cutshaw took 13 points for Tusculum while aiding in an additional four baskets. In a strong defensive game, Tusculum grabbed the upper hand, capitalizing with 39 points coming off the games 55 turnovers.
