Queens clinches SAC Men’s Soccer Regular Season Title with Senior Day victory

Box Score CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Queens University of Charlotte men's soccer team notched a 4-2 win over Lenoir-Rhyne University this evening at Dickson Field, clinching the SAC Regular Season Title and the number one seed heading into the Food Lion SAC Men's Soccer Championships. Queens completes the regular season with a 9-2 conference record, while L-R ends their season at 4-6-1 in the league.

The Royals got going early scoring a goal 11:27 into action when Queens' pair of Brazilians got together to put the Royals ahead, 1-0, taking advantage of a set piece opportunity. After senior midfielder Thiago Andrade sent the ball into the play on a corner kick, senior forward Felipe Netto leaped into the air to head the ball into the back of the net.

The Bears had a chance to equalize the match in the 29th when Alex Mather sent a header towards Queens' goal. Luckily, defender Ryan Kawczynski was standing on the goal line waiting to block the shot and collect the team save.

The second goal of the half would come from Andrade, who fired the ball into the net after collecting a pass from sophomore forward Erick Suarez. Suarez delivered the ball to the senior off of his heel before Andrade juked his defender for the open shot and score in the 34th.

Queens would hold their 2-0 lead into the break.

The Royals scored quickly in the opening five minutes of the second half. Andrade would be the shooter, rebounding a saved shot from Suarez before kicking it past L-R goalkeeper Stefan Dill for the 3-0 advantage.

Another goal would come in the 72nd from freshman defender Jonathan Onyeaka. Onyeaka scored the goal one touching a shot from Fischbach that ricocheted off the crossbar. The goal was his fourth of the season and Fischbach collected his fifth assist of the year on the score.

L-R would finally find the back of the net at 78:23 on a header from Mather. Following a shot from Ben Jones that was saved by Zach Mellon, Mather was able to meet a cross from Jones in the box for the goal.

The Bears then scored a second chipping Queens goalkeeper Simen Walmann with less than five minutes to play.

During the halftime break, Queens' seniors, Thiago Andrade, Gersi Cilingiri, Yannick Fischbach, Zach Mellon, Felipe Netto, Simen Walmann and Charles Wolf were each recognized for their careers as Royals.

The regular season title is the first for Queens in their first season as a SAC member.

Queens will be back in action on November 5 at Dickson Field in the quarterfinal round of the Food Lion SAC Men's Soccer Championships. Game time is set for 7:30 p.m.
