Box Score 2 CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Queens University of Charlotte softball team returned to Park Road Park to face the King College Tornado in a doubleheader today. The Royals split with the Tornado winning game one 4-1 before falling 10-2 in game two, but the biggest story on the day was the continued pitching excellence of senior
Chantel Dodge (Shalimar, Fla., Choctawhatchee).
Dodge started the first game for Queens, and throughout the game she continued to show why she is one of the top pitchers in Conference Carolinas. Dodge not only limited King to just four hits and one run in the first game, but she carried a no-hitter into the fifth inning.
Queens won the first game behind an offense that put three runs across the plate in the first inning. The Royals batters quickly jumped on the opposing pitcher, and
Megan Lathbury (Georgetown, Del., Sussex Central), Dodge and
Kaitlyn Cheek (Richmond, Va., JR Tucker ) all drove in runs during their first at bats against the Tornado. Lathbury and Cheek led game one's offense each picking up two hits in three appearances. The Royals' bats were unable to stay hot as Queens only scored one more run during the game.
Keeya Turner (Fayetteville, N.C., 71st ) made the score displaying her speed reaching home from first off an infield error by the first baseman.
In the second game the Royals struggled in both the field and at the plate as they fell to King 10-2. Queens and King traded runs in the second to make the game 1-1 before King started to pull away with a three run third. The Royals did try to catch up in the fourth with a home run by Cheek, but King continued to pull away due to their hot bats.
Queens was only able to collect six hits in the game compared to the 16 put on the board by King.
Emma Schultz (Silver Spring, Md., Paint Branch) paced Queens this game going 2-for-3.
The Royals stand at 18-20 on the season, and currently lead the East Division of Conference Carolinas with an 8-3 record. They return to action Monday when they travel to North Greenville to face the West Division leading North Greenville University Crusaders.
