Box Score HARTSVILLE, S.C. – The Royals traveled to take on Coker College in a game they needed to win in order to keep their hopes of making the conference tournament alive. However, Queens University of Charlotte fell 71-68 to the Cobras dropping their record to 7-9 in the league. Coker improves to 10-6 in Conference Carolinas women's basketball action.
Queens (9-16) did not have their best day shooting only posting a 35.6 field goal percentage, while Coker (10-15) shot 43.1 percent from the floor. Queens out-rebounded the Cobras 43-40 winning the battle under the boards.
Shonice Pettaway (Walstonburg, N.C., Greene Central) led the way for Queens with 22 points and 12 rebounds for her 10
th double-double of the year.
Dyonna Battle (Rocky Mount, N.C., Rocky Mount) went 5-of-12 from the floor scoring 14 points.
Sarah Myatt (Show Camp, N.C., Southern Alamance) and
Shanel Sweet (Land O'Lakes, Fla., Land O' Lakes) chipped in with eight and seven points, respectively.
Coker's Amber Lau lit up the gym scoring a game-high 37 points after shooting 8-for-13 from behind the three-point arc. Kelley Godbout was the next leading scorer for the Cobras with just eight points. Jessica Cohen led under the glass with nine rebounds, while Lau snatched down seven.
Coker opened the game with a 12-4 spurt before the Royals came back scoring eight unanswered points to tie the game with 12:56 to play. The Cobras would go back ahead five after Lau sparked a short run, but Queens answered closing the half strong with a nine point advantage heading to the locker room.
Pettaway helped the Royals extend their lead to 13, 47-34, scoring seven of Queens' nine points to begin the second half. The Cobras would chip away at Queens' lead tying the game at 49-49 with 10:28 on the clock. A short lived lead for the Cobras would follow before Pettaway equalized the game back up with a lay-in off the glass. One more tie would follow before Coker took the lead for good going up by as much as seven in the final minutes.
Queens will host Mount Olive for their final game of the season on Friday at the Grady Cole Center at 5:30 p.m.
