Royals end skid with win over Coker

The Royals defeated Coker 74-72.

Box Score CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Freshman guard Shatonya Hardy (Fayetteville, N.C., E.E. Smith) scored a career-high 25 points this evening pacing the Royals in their 74-72 win over Coker College. The win ends a three game skid for Queens University of Charlotte as they advance to 2-4 in conference play and 4-11 on the season. The Cobras are also at 2-4, while falling to 2-13 on the year.

Hardy scored her 25 points on 9-of-11 shooting from the floor. She also shot 6-of-7 from the foul line and totaled six rebounds, three assists and three steals. Shonice Pettaway (Walstonburg, N.C., Greene Central) scored 16 points, while Sarah Myatt recorded her fifth double-double of the year with 14 points and 12 rebounds. Melissa Thomas (Havelock, N.C., Havelock) chipped in with 10 points, and Shanel Sweet (Land O'Lakes, Fla., Land O' Lakes) dished out five assists.

Jessica Cohen and Kelley Godbout led the Cobras with 15 points apiece. Cohen also led her squad totaling seven rebounds, while Godbout grabbed six. Jasmine Alston and Hailey Yohn each scored 10 points in the loss.

After trailing for most of the first half, the Royals were able get back in the game taking the lead in the final minute on a layup from Myatt. Priscilla Fenty tied the game up just before the break knocking down two at the charity stripe for a 36-36 score.

In the second, the Royals kept a slight advantage over the visitors never going up by more than four points. Coker took the lead with just under eight minutes to play creating a five point cushion, but Queens had one final push in them taking the lead for good with 1:29 left in regulation as Pettaway iced two free-throws.

An extremely evenly matched game, the Cobras and the Royals found themselves neck and neck in nearly every statistical category. Both teams had 39 rebounds and 17 turnovers, with Queens holding the slight advantage shooting, hitting 47.3-percent from the floor compared to Coker's 42.6-percent.

The real difference in the game came at the charity stripe where the Royals scored 18 of their points, compared to just eight points from the line for the Cobras.

Queens returns to action on the road against conference rival Belmont Abbey on Saturday at 5:30 p.m.
