Box Score CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Sophomore forward
Shonice Pettaway (Walstonburg, N.C., Greene Central) led the way for Queens University of Charlotte this evening recording a double-double on 16 points and 16 rebounds, but her performance wasn't enough as the Royals fell 60-50 to Lincoln Memorial University in women's basketball action. Queens falls to 1-3 on the season as the Railsplitters improve to 3-1.
Pettaway added two assists, two steals and two blocks to the stat sheet tonight, while
Melissa Thomas (Havelock, N.C., Havelock) scored 15 points.
Shatonya Hardy (Fayetteville, N.C., E.E. Smith) tallied eight points, five assists and three rebounds in the game.
Dayshalee Salaman led the Railsplitters' offense with 20 points and six assists. Lauren Cochran and Amberly O'Dell scored 13 and 12 points, respectively. Leading Lincoln Memorial under the glass was MaRanda Boddie with 11.
The Railsplitters jumped out to a 9-3 lead before the Royals put together a 12-to-5 run to go up by one point, 15-14. Hardy knocked down a three-pointer to give the Royals the one point lead. Not a minute later Kelsey Bradford of Lincoln Memorial scored a lay-up returning the lead to the visiting Railsplitters. Lincoln Memorial went up by as much as five, but the Royals hung tight tying the game up with a bucket from three-point land scored by Thomas around the two minute mark. A jumper and a free-throw gave the Railsplitters a three point lead at the half.
The Railsplitters outscored Queens 16-to-2 in the paint, while the Royals scored 10 second chance points compared to Lincoln Memorial's two. Queens also netted 11 points off of turnovers.
Thomas drilled a three-point basket from deep at the start of the second to tie the game back up at 30-30. Turnovers allowed the Railsplitters to regain control of the game and get on a roll. The visitors went up by as much as 13 points during a scoring drought for the Royals. Two free-throws by Pettaway ended the dead period for Queens as they cut Lincoln Memorials lead down to five, 45-40. However, the Railsplitters had a few more runs left in them building and 11 point lead on three occasions in the final six minutes of the game.
The Royals will travel down to St. Petersburg, Fla., to take part in the Eckerd College Classic over the weekend facing Florida Southern and Eckerd.
