Royals drop game with Catawba

The Royals lost 69-49.

Box Score SALISBURY, N.C. – Queens University of Charlotte dropped game two of the season to Catawba College 69-49 in women's basketball action on Tuesday night at Goodman Gym.  The Catawba Indians start the season at 1-0, while the Royals fall to 0-2 on the young season.

Dyonna Battle (Rocky Mount, N.C., Rocky Mount) led Queens' offense with 11 points, while Sarah Myatt (Show Camp, N.C., Southern Alamance) led under the basket pulling down 11 rebounds. Shonice Pettaway (Walstonburg, N.C., Greene Central) delivered eight points and nine rebounds for Queens, while Abby Pettit (Apex, N.C., Cary Christian) chipped in eight points for the Royals.

Catawba got 14 points apiece from Chloe Bully and Nisha Long. Bully hit on 6-of-9 attempts, including a pair of three-pointers, and recorded four steals. Long added six rebounds, three assists and three steals. Dana Hicks scored eight points and grabbed six rebounds for Catawba, while Elizabeth Merritt also scored eight points

The game was tightly contested over the opening ten minutes with the Royals leading 14-10 before Catawba tied the game up for the sixth time of the contest. They then began to pull away over the final eight minutes.  A 10-0 run in a little over a two minute span helped the Indians jump out to a 26-16 lead. Bully hit a pair of three-pointers to start the run.

The Lady Indians took a 30-20 lead to the break as Queens shot just 27% in the opening stanza. After going down by 12 early in the second half, the Royals reeled off six straight to close within 32-26. Pettit, Melissa Thomas (Havelock, N.C., Havelock) and Pettaway knocked down baskets to close the gap. However, Catawba would answer with a 16-2 run to put the game away. The Royals never got closer than 16 points the rest of the way.

Queens will be looking to grab its first win of the season this Saturday in “The Oven” when they face UNC-Pembroke at 2 p.m.
