CHARLOTTE, N.C.— Seven different Royals scored this evening as the Queens University of Charlotte women's lacrosse team lost to fourth-ranked Limestone College at the Queens Sports Complex, 17-7. The Royals fall to 4-8 overall (2-1 CC) while the Saints remain undefeated in Conference Carolinas action at 3-0 (11-1 overall).
The Royals looked as if they were ready to play as Brittany Barnwell (Lorton, Va., Bishop Ireton) found the back of the net for the first goal of the game in the first minute of play. The Saints immediately answered going on a five-to-zero run in a five minute span. Raquel Prager and Chelsea Treat each netted two goals apiece in the run. Three of goals were on free-position-shots. A Rebecca Markle (Hampstead, Md., North Carroll ) save on a free-position shot was answered with a goal by Caitlin Flanagan (West Islip, N.Y., West Islip) for the home team breaking up the Saint's run. Limestone scored four more goals before the half ended giving them a 9-4 advantage. Brittany Philip (Corning, N.Y., Corning East) and Caitlin O'Rourke ( Winter Springs, Fla., Winter Springs ) scored the last two goals of the half for Queens.
At the half, it appeared Limestone was the more aggressive team on the offensive end firing off 24 shots to Queens' seven. They had also connected on 5-8 free-position-shots capitalizing on the Royals' fouls.
Freshman Caitlin Miller (Ocean View, Del., Worcester Prep) scored the first goal of the second half bringing Limestone to within four, 9-5. A three-to-zero run by the Saints stretched the margin back out to seven, 12-5. Queens couldn't find their offensive rhythm in the second half to close the gap scoring two more goals to Limestone's five for a final score of 17-7.
Queens was outshot 45-17 in this evening's game. The Royals committed 17 fouls in the loss putting the Saints in free-position-shot opportunities 13 times. Markle made seven of her 20 saves for the night on free-position shots.
Duffey, the national leader in assists, tallied two tonight with one goal. Philip had three draw controls and two ground balls. O'Rourke scooped up three ground balls. Alison Doron ( Zionsville, Ind., Zionsville ) rounded out the Royals scoring with one goal.
The Saints were led by Prager who scored six goals tonight. Treat, Kelly Lalonde, Jessie Aguglia, and Kristen Dmarzi each netted two goals apiece. Rachelle McLellan recorded nine saves in the win.
Queens will host Converse College on Wednesday, April 7th at 6 p.m. at the Queens Sports Complex.
