Queens Participates in the WBCA’s Pink Zone Event

This is the third year for the Royals to engage in the breast cancer awareness initiative

CHARLOTTE, N.C.- For the third consecutive year, Queens University of Charlotte will join in the Women's Basketball Coaches Association's (WBCA) breast cancer awareness initiative, Pink Zone. Queens' Pink Zone night is set for Tuesday, February 17, as they take on Coker College.

The WBCA Pink Zone™ initiative is a global, unified effort for the Women's Basketball Coaches Association's nation of coaches to assist in raising breast cancer awareness on the court, across campuses, in communities and beyond. In 2008 over 1,200 organizations joined in the event.

This year the event has a special meaning to women's basketball head coach Trudi Lacey who just lost her collegiate coach and mentor, Kay Yow, to the disease.

“Coach Yow's unwavering spirit, her faithfulness and passion will live on forever.,” said Lacey. “Her life was a testament of courage and hope.  She will forever remain in my heart and I am inspired to continue her legacy of putting others first, giving it all you have and being the best  you can be.  We love her and miss her very much..”

While at the game patrons can pick up literature donated by the Charlotte chapter of the Susan G. Komen for the Cure, enter a 50-50 drawing with the proceeds benefiting the Kay Yow WBCA Cancer Fund, and hope to snag one of the 100 Pink Zone t-shirts that will be distrusted throughout the night.

Additionally, there will be a special halftime performance during the women's game from one of the Royals favorite groups, the Greenville Community Combined Youth Organization's marching band.

In the past two years, Queens has raised over $500.00 to be donated to breast cancer research.
