Alex Leatu Named Queens Director of Tennis

CHARLOTTE, N.C.  – Queens University of Charlotte has officially announced the promotion of Alexandra Leatu to Director of Tennis. Leatu, who was named head women's tennis coach in the summer of 2022, will now oversee both the men's and women's programs in her expanded leadership role.

"I'm incredibly honored to step into the role of Director of Tennis at Queens University of Charlotte," said Leatu. "This program holds a special place in my heart, and I'm excited to continue building a culture of excellence, integrity, and growth both on and off the court. I'm grateful to Cherie Swarthout, Randall Goble, and Brandon Johnson for this opportunity and look forward to leading our student-athletes to new heights."

This season marked Leatu's first as head coach of the men's program, where she immediately made an impact. Under her leadership, the Royals produced an All-ASUN First Team selection, an ASUN All-Freshman Team honoree, and an Academic All-ASUN recipient.

On the women's side, Leatu has cultivated both competitive and academic success. In February, Lucy Hogan became the first player in program history to be named ASUN Player of the Week since Queens transitioned to Division I. During the 2022 season, four Royals earned CSC Academic All-District honors, and an ASUN All-Academic Team recipient.

"When we hired Alex three seasons ago, we knew we were getting a very experienced coach and student of the game who leads at a high level," Queens Director of Athletics Cherie Swarthout stated. "Making the decision to elevate her role to Director of Tennis over both the men's and women's programs was not a hard one to make. Her transition to coaching both teams this spring has been rather seamless for the high-performing athletes on the rosters that excel in the classroom and on the courts. We look forward to the programs continuing to grow under her leadership."

Leatu's coaching background includes stints at Weatherford College and Georgia State University, where she led the Panthers to a Sun Belt Tournament appearance in 2019. As an assistant, Leatu helped the Panthers win a Sun Belt Conference Championship. The program also earned Georgia State's and the Sun Belt's Highest GPA Award with her on staff. Leatu began her collegiate coaching career at the University of New Haven.

As a student-athlete, Leatu began her career at Vanderbilt, earning Second Team All-SEC and SEC All-Tournament honors while competing at No. 1 singles and doubles and ranking inside the ITA top 75. She later transferred to Baylor, where she won three Big 12 Conference titles and helped the Bears reach a top 15 national ranking.
