Eastern Kentucky Travels to Curry Arena for Midweek Clash with Royals

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The Royals will wrap up their three-game homestand on Wednesday, February 12, when they take on Eastern Kentucky. The matchup against the Colonels will serve as the National Girls and Women in Sports Recognition game, presented by Northwestern Mutual. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Curry Arena.

THE MATCHUPS
Wednesday's game in Charlotte marks the third meeting between EKU and Queens since 2023.  The Colonels lead the all-time series 2-0 and have won both meetings by 21 or more points, including a 33-point win last time playing inside Curry Arena.
In the last meeting against the Colonels Jordyn Weaver finished with 12 points and a team high five rebounds. Tiziana Huici contributed 10 points in 22 minutes of action.

SCOUTING THE ROYALS (8-15 overall, 2-10 ASUN)
  • Queens comes into the contest averaging 65.5 points per game, while allowing 70.6 PPG, resulting in a -5.1 scoring margin. The Royals are shooting 38.6% from the field and 27.0% from three-point range, making an average of 4.6 threes per game.
  • The Royals secured their second conference victory of the year with a dominant defensive performance, holding Austin Peay to just 17 first-half points and 26.2 percent shooting from the field.
  •  On the boards, Queens holds a slight rebounding edge over opponents (37.7 RPG to 36.5 RPG).
  • The Royals are forcing opponents into 19.3 TOs per game. Queens is also averaging 8.2 steals and 3.0 blocks per game.
  • Queens has relied on Jordyn Weaver (13.8 PPG, 7.5 RPG) as their go-to scorer and rebounder. She has been consistent in the paint, shooting 48.8% from the field and 74.3% from the free-throw line.
  • Aylesha Wade (9.2 PPG, 3.5 RPG, 2.6 APG) is a key perimeter threat, shooting 33.8% from three, while Ana Barreto (9.2 PPG) contributes both inside and outside.
  • Kemia Ward (6.5 PPG, 5.4 RPG) is a physical presence in the post, and Kaitlyn Adams (4.4 PPG) provides depth off the bench
SCOUTING THE COLONELS (16-9 overall, 6-6 ASUN)
  • Eastern Kentucky is coming off a narrow 68-65 loss to the ASUN's No. 1-ranked FGCU last Saturday, nearly snapping the Eagles' 44-game win streak over conference opponents.  Prior to last week's loss, the Colonels had won three straight games in league play.
  • Fifth year forward Jasmine McGinnis-Taylor enters this week's slate of games on a hot streak, nearing a double double in both contests with 17 points, 11 rebounds in the win over Stetson and 15 points, eight rebounds in the loss to FGCU.  The Omaha, Nebraska native is averaging a career-best 10.8 points and 7.7 rebounds per game this season.
  • Senior guard Kaitlyn Costner continues to lead the club with 12.9 PPG and has ended in double figures in 17 of her last 20 games.  Fifth year guard Alice Recanati is second on the team in scoring with 12.5 PPG while also leading the team with 4.4 assists per game, she is first in the league and top 100 nationally in passing categories. 
  • Freshman guard Liz Freihofer is fourth on the team with 11.0 PPG and had 16 points against FGCU, the Kentuckian is a 7-time ASUN weekly honor recipient this season.
  • As of Tuesday, EKU is tied for sixth in the ASUN Conference women's basketball standings with six games left in the 2024-25 regular season.
  • EKU boasts a solid offensive attack, averaging 73.1 points per game while holding opponents to 65.6 PPG. They shoot 42.2% from the field and 33.2% from three-point range, making an average of 6.7 threes per game.
  • Defensively, they record 7.6 steals and 3.0 blocks per game, showing a capability for forcing mistakes, though they allow opponents to shoot 39.5% from the field.
