Johnson & Wales Visits Curry Arena for a Saturday Afternoon Clash with the Royals

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Queens (4-3) will face Johnson & Wales (6-3) in a non-conference women's basketball match on Saturday at 2 p.m. in Curry Arena. With a win the Royals will extend their winning streak to four games for the first time since the 2012-2013 season.

THE MATCHUPS 
Both teams enter the match riding multi-game win streaks, the Royals have put together three straight wins for the first time since 2014, while the Wildcats have won their last four games. The Royals have won the last three meetings against the Wildcats, most recently with a 101-51 win in Charlotte last season. The Wildcats Head Coach Jill Dunn is no stranger to the ASUN after spending nine seasons at Jacksonville, where she still holds the record for most wins by a Dolphins head coach with 126. In the last meeting against the Wildcats, Jordyn Weaver paced the Royals with a 20 point and 13 rebound performance in Curry Arena. 

SCOUTING THE ROYALS (3-3 overall, 0-0 ASUN) 

  • Boasting a 4-3 record with a mix of dominant victories and a few games that got away, Queens is riding the momentum of a three-game winning streak, including key road victories against USC Upstate and Presbyterian.  

  • Junior Jordyn Weaver has emerged as the team's centerpiece, averaging 13.6 points and 6.9 rebounds per game. Her consistent scoring and rebounding have provided the Royals stability in key moments, including a standout 22-point, 10-rebound performance at Presbyterian. Weaver has scored at least 10 points for the Royals in 18 of her last 19 games.  

  • Guard Ana Barreto, a sharpshooter from beyond the arc, who has converted 42.9 percent of her three-point attempts. Barreto currently leads the Royals in three-pointers made and ranks 9th in the ASUN. 

  • Jermany Mapp has been key piece coming off the bench for Coach Brown's squad, Mapp contributes 10.6 points per game with efficient shooting from the paint and beyond the arc. 

  • The Royals excel at creating turnovers and contesting shots, averaging 9.4 steals and 3.4 blocks per game. They have also been strong on the boards, out rebounding opponents by a slim margin 38.0 to 36.4 rebounds per game. 

SCOUTING THE WILDCATS (6-3 overall, 0-0 USCAA) 

  • Head Coach Jill Dunn begins her fourth year at the helm of the Johnson & Wales Charlotte women's basketball program in 2024-25. She has led the Wildcats to back-to-back USCAA Division II National Runners-Up finishes in 2022-23 and 2023-24. 

  • The Wildcats enter Curry Arena riding a four-game win streak that started against Warren Wilson on November 17. 

  • Johnson & Wales has demonstrated consistency on both ends of the court, leading to an average scoring margin of +6.4 points per game. Notable wins include dominant performances against William Peace (71-34) and Salem (83-57). 

  • The Wildcats are averaging 67.9 points per game, with significant contributions from team leader Maliah Preston, who averages 13.2 points per game. Preston has been complemented by Jordan Durant (12.2 points per game), who has been efficient inside the arc with a 45.7 shooting percentage. 

  • Johnson & Wales also benefits from the rebounding dominance of Gabby Tapley and Laken Powe, who average 6.8 and 5.6 rebounds per game, respectively, helping the Wildcats out-rebound opponents by nearly nine boards per game. 

  • The Wildcats come into Friday's contest shooting 24.4 percent from three-point range, and 56.6 percent from the free throw line. 

  • Defensively, Johnson & Wales thrives on generating turnovers, forcing 26.3 per game while averaging an impressive 15.6 steals per contest.
