Men’s Lacrosse Defeats Hampton for First DI Win in Program History

HAMPTON, Va. – The Queens University of Charlotte men's lacrosse team (1-2) traveled to face Hampton University this afternoon, collecting a 15-8 win over the Pirates (0-1). The win is the first NCAA Division I win for the Royals and for head coach Chris Panos. Queens began its transition to DI as a member of the ASUN Conference on July 1, 2022.  
 
How it Happened
After trailing 2-0 early in the game, the Royals scored six straight goals to take control of today's game and never looked back. Queens eventually took a 9-3 lead into the halftime break.
 
In the third quarter, a three-goal push in the final five minutes of the period increased the Royals' lead to nine, 14-5. The Pirates tried to make a push in the fourth, but the Royals' lead was too much to overcome.

  • Jack Royer finished matching his career-high in points with eight on three goals and five assists.
  • Jacob Bowen recorded a hat trick for the first time in his collegiate career. He added two assists to total five points.
  • Brendan Nace recorded his first collegiate hat trick for Queens.
  • Bennett Smith recorded a career-high two goals while Adam Barry and Micah Stechmiller also scored two goals.
  • Hayden Summers-Thompson led on the defensive end with six caused turnovers and six ground balls. Both were new career highs.
  • Will Powley totaled two saves in goal to earn his first DI win in goal. He played 30 minutes.
  • Paxtin Powell took the loss in goal for Hampton after totaling 11 saves.
  • Ellison Burt-Murray led Hampton with five goals.
  • Queens was outshot, 37-33, by Hampton, but the Royals put 30 shots on goal compared the Pirates' 15 shots on goal.
  • Both teams won 14 face-offs, while Queens won the battle for ground balls, 49-47.

I would like to thank Coach Chazz Woodson and Hampton University for the opportunity to compete and their hospitality as well. It was a fierce battle for 60 minutes and I have tremendous respect for their program and the culture they're building there."
