Royals Swimming Opens With a Split At Davidson

DAVIDSON, N.C. – The Queens University of Charlotte men's and women's swimming teams returned to action on Thursday afternoon with a meet at Davidson College. The men were electric in the opener tallying a 200-94 victory over the Wildcats while the women fell just short 157-137 inside the Charles A. Cannon Pool.

In their first meet of the 2021-22 season, the men dominated by finishing atop all 14 events, including 12 individual and two team competitions. Reigning All-American Skyler Cook-Weeks flourished in the individual events posting victories in the 200 (1:41.61) and 50-yard (20.79) freestyles. During team events, Cook-Weeks was victorious in the 4x50 yard medley relay (1:31.33) and 4x100 yard freestyle (3:02.22). Matej Dusa was a part of the 4x100 yard freestyle relay that took first. The All-American also finished in first in the 100-yard freestyle (46.18) and butterfly (50.61). Fellow All-American Balazs Berecz dominated in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:04.53) and the 200-yard IM (1:52.02).

Head coach Jeff Dugdale was very happy with the performances. "I am pleased with our performances for our first meet," stated Dugdale. "We used the month of September to swim into shape, and we will use the month of October to race into shape."

Freshman Tova Andersson highlighted the women's events as the rookie took home three individual victories and a second-place team run. Andersson finished first in the 100-yard freestyle (52:21), 100-yard backstroke (58:57), and 200-yard IM (2:05.46) before finishing second in the 4x100 yard free relay with Monica Gumina, Natalie Van Noy, and Caroline Lawrence. Vladyslava Maznytska and Bobbi Gichard posted top four finishes in the 100-yard backstroke before Gichard took first in the 200-yard backstroke with Mazkytska closely behind.

Despite the loss, head coach Jeff Dugdale was encouraged by the evening. "With a heavy freshman class and missing a key swimmer, I felt that the women had an excellent learning experience that will be important towards the end of the season," Dugdale explained. "Nevertheless, it was great to see Davidson take advantage of the opportunity."

The Royals have a quick turnaround as they will be back in the pool Friday night when they host the University of North Carolina. Due to the current regulations, only guests on the pass list will be permitted into the Levine Aquatic Center. Fans are encouraged to follow the Royals live on the Queens Sports Network.
