ATLANTA, GA. – The Queens University of Charlotte men's and women's swimming teams both tallied victories on Saturday in a dual meet at Emory University in Georgia. The Royals men improved to 2-1 on the season following a 150-112 win while the women tallied their first win on the new season by ousting the Eagles 156-106. Of the 32 events, both squads finished at the top in 11 of their respective events.
For the women,
Tova Andersson picked up individual victories by sweeping the 100-yard (58.08) and 200-yard backstroke (2:04.52). In the 200-yard freestyle,
Monica Gumina placed first (1:54.18) while two-time Bluegrass Mountain Conference champion
Giulia Grasso (1:55.21) came in just behind. In the 100-yard freestyle, the Royals placed three at the top with
Danielle Melilli (51.85) in first,
Monica Gumina (52.70) in second, and
Giulia Grasso (53.06) in third. Reigning NCAA champion in the 100-yard breaststroke,
Danielle Melilli cruised to victory in the event at 1:05.33. Queens placed atop in the 1000-yard freestyle behind
Amber Rydzewski (10:26.17) and
Rebecca Dany (10:30.46) as well as the 500-yard freestyle behind
Rebecca Dany (5:07.32),
Amber Rydzewski (5:08.42), and
Monica Gumina (5:12.12)
The women's relay squads were outstanding on the afternoon. In the 200-yard medley relay, Tova Anderson,
Danielle Melilli,
Cece Mayer, and
Monica Gumina took first at 1:45.90. In the final event, the Royals 200-yard freestyle relay swam by
Danielle Melilli,
Cece Mayer,
Kayla Tennant, and
Natalie Van Noy finished first at 1:36.84.
The Royals men opened the afternoon in dominant fashion as
Luke Erwee (9:33.12),
Garrison Johnson (9:53.37), and
Aidan Henry (10:03.66) finished in order for the 1,000-yard freestyle. The first place finish was one of two for All-American
Luke Erwee who also topped the 500-yard freestyle (4:38.33). Senior
Alex Kunert was sensational again by placing first in the 200-yard freestyle (1:38.95), 100-yard freestyle (45.25), and 100-yard butterfly (49.28).
Balazs Berecz tallied victories in the 100-yard (55.60) and 200-yard breaststroke (2:02.46). Queens closed out the individual races with a top three finish in the 400-yard IM as
Jan Delkeskamp (4:01.26),
Balazs Berecz (4:02.10), and
Yannick Plasil (4:06.05) finished in order at the top.
In the final event,
Matej Dusa,
Skyler Cook-Weeks,
Alex Kunert, and Morgan Myers teamed up to capture the 200-yard freestyle relay with a time of 1:22.24.
The Royals will have a break in competition before they travel to the University of South Carolina for a meet on Friday, Oct. 29. The meet is scheduled to begin at 4:00 p.m. in Columbia, S.C.
