Queens Loses Extra-Inning Slugfest in Cougar Classic Finale

Box Score Columbus, GA - The Queens University of Charlotte softball team (6-5) suffered a tightly contested loss to Union by a 14-12 final in nine innings to cap the Cougar Classic. Queens finishes the weekend 2-1 after the second game of their doubleheader versus Columbus State was canceled.

Union 14 Queens 12

Both teams scored early and often in the offensive slugfest. Defense lapsed on both sides in a game that featured nine combined errors. A three-run homer by freshman Kayla Smith put the Royals ahead 7-5 after four innings. Union came back to take the lead with three runs in the fifth to lead 8-7. Down a run with two outs in the bottom of the seventh, senior Alyssa Strickler scored on a defensive error to tie the game 8-8 and send it into extra-innings.

Union followed with four runs in the top of the eighth seemingly putting the game out of reach. Queens rallied back ferociously, however, to tie it with of a two-run single from sophomore Brianna Linder with two outs to even the score 12-12.

Union scored two in the ninth and the Royals left the game-tying run on first base falling short in the epic 14-12 outcome in extra-innings.

Queens returns to Charlotte for a doubleheader versus King University on Wednesday, February 19th at 1 p.m.
