Box Score 2 FLORENCE, S.C. – Facing two games on the schedule on Saturday, the Queens University of Charlotte softball team split its doubleheader to begin its four-game slate this weekend at the Francis Marion Tournament, the Swamp Fox Sizzler, from Griffin Athletic Complex in Florence, S.C. The Royals move to 6-4 overall on the season with two games remaining on Sunday, Feb. 24.
Game One: Queens 5, West Liberty 3
Courtney Pearson (4-1) picked up the win, five different Royals crossed the plate and the Royals took game one of the Swamp Fox Sizzler by a final score of 5-3 over West Liberty University.
Queens racked up five runs on nine hits, committing zero errors, while on its way to notching its sixth win on the season. West Liberty moves to 2-5 on the season.
Pearson struck out four en route to her fourth win of the season in five decisions. She has now earned the win in four of the Royals' 10 games this season.
Jordan Hunt led Queens with a RBI double in the fourth inning, scoring teammate
Sydney Ditto, who reached based on a walk.
McKenzie McCullen followed Ditto with a single to advance Ditto into scoring territory before crossing the plate on Hunt's two-bagger.
McCullen went around to score later in the inning,
Chloe Linton went around to score in the sixth inning after pinch running after Hunt was hit by a pitch, and the Royals added two more – the winning two runs – in the seventh inning when
Gerlea Patton and
Kelly Winter scored.
Game Two:
Facing off against the host of the tournament, Francis Marion, the Royals were downed by the Patriots, 10-3, in game two of on Saturday of the Swamp Fox Sizzler. Katelyn Ellard took the win for the Patriots to improve to a perfect 6-0 this season, while Kristen McPherson took the loss for the Royals in the freshman's first career decision, moving to 0-1.
Queens fell behind early as Francis Marion put up eight unanswered runs through the first three innings of play. The Royals struck back with two runs of their own in the top of the fourth inning thanks to a two-run double to center field by
Grace Valchar that scored Hunt and
Brooke Sanford. Valchar scored later in the inning thanks to an error in the field that allowed
Cierra Robinson to reach base. However, Francis Marion was perfect after that, going on to score the game's final two runs for the 10-3 victory.
The Royals finished with three hits in game two, led by Valchar's double, a triple from Patton and a single by Hunt.
Queens returns to action on Sunday, Feb. 24 as it faces West Liberty and Francis Marion for the second consecutive day. The Royals will round out the tournament with games at 1 and 3 p.m. from Griffin Athletic Complex.
