Women’s Volleyball Gears Up for Fifth Annual Queens Fall Classic

Queens Fall Classic Tournament Central

CHARLOTTE, N.C. –
During Labor Day Weekend, the Queens University of Charlotte women's volleyball team will host the program's fifth annual Queens Fall Classic inside Curry Arena.

The invitational will host seven teams in addition to Queens across the two-day schedule as a total of 15 matches will be played at the Levine Center.

This year's field is comprised of teams from four different conferences across the Southeast Region, including Anderson University (S.C.), Queens, and Wingate University from the South Atlantic Conference, Augusta University and Georgia College from the Peach Belt Conference, Barton College and Converse College from Conference Carolinas and Winston-Salem State University from the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association. The CIAA competes in the NCAA's Atlantic Region but does count toward Southeast Regional competition since the school is located in North Carolina.

Of the eight teams in attendance, seven had a winning record during the 2017 season. Anderson, Barton, Georgia College, Queens and Wingate each made an appearance in 2017 NCAA Division II Southeast Regional a year ago, while Winston-Salem State appeared in the Atlantic Regional last season.

The Royals will take the court against Converse (12:45 p.m.) and Barton (7:30 p.m.) on Friday, followed by a matchup with Georgia College on Saturday night at 7:00 p.m. in the tournament finale.

Queens University of Charlotte (2-0)

Queens, the defending South Atlantic Conference Tournament Champion, opened the 2018 season with back-to-back wins in the Coker/Francis Marion Tournament last weekend, defeating Virginia Union University in the season opener followed by a victory over tournament host Francis Marion University in a five-set thriller.

Sophomore Chanel Turner led the team last weekend with 4.38 kills per set and a .284 hitting percentage to go along with 3.13 digs per set on defense. Fellow sophomore Casey Tarvin followed close behind with 4.00 kills per set and 5.43 digs per set as well as four service aces.

Two more sophomores, middle Logan Witt and libero JayCee Jones also played key roles in helping the Royals to two victories to open the year. Redshirt-freshman setter Alexandria Becerra paced the offense with 7.17 assists per set.

The Bulldogs are the two-time defending Conference Carolinas Champions but had a rough start to the 2018 season. Barton lost all four of its matches in the UAA Invitational in Anchorage, Alaska last weekend.

The Valkyries also opened their season in the Coker/Francis Marion Tournament, winning one of four matches over the weekend. After three consecutive three-set losses, Converse closed out the tournament with a 3-1 win over Winston-Salem State last Saturday.

Converse features a balanced offensive attack led by freshman outside Morgan Pearson who averages 2.85 kills per set. Georgia College (2-2)

The Bobcats split four match decisions last weekend in the NorCal Volleyball Classic in Turlock, California. Georgia College picked up wins over Humboldt State University and Sonoma State University on the final day of competition after falling in their first two contests of the season.
