CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Queens University of Charlotte women's volleyball battled throughout four sets Thursday night, but Charlotte came away with a 3-1 victory (21-25, 25-17, 25-22, 25-23) at Curry Arena.
The Royals fall to 3-8 on the season, while Charlotte improves to 3-7.
THE SHORT STORY
Callie DeSchryver and Elizabeth Layson led the Royals with 12 kills apiece, while DeSchryver added a team-high 22 digs and two aces. Emma Norris recorded 10 kills while hitting .214 and added five total blocks.
Megan Kelly finished with 18 assists and six digs, while Kyla Coffey contributed five kills and five digs. Queens hit .153 as a team, compared to .173 for Charlotte.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Queens came out strong in the opening set, jumping out to a 13-4 advantage. Charlotte battled back to even the score at 13-13, but the Royals regained control late and closed out the set, 25-21.
Charlotte responded in the second set, building an early lead and pulling away for a 25-17 win to even the match at 1-1.
The Royals again established an early advantage in the third set, taking a 16-9 lead. Charlotte mounted a comeback, eventually moving in front 17-16 before closing out the set, 25-22.
The fourth set remained close throughout. Charlotte held an 18-16 lead when a power outage interrupted play. The teams ultimately continued playing through the outage, with Charlotte extending its advantage to 22-19.
Queens continued to battle, pulling within one at 24-23 following a Charlotte attack error, but the 49ers closed out the match on the next point, 25-23.
BY THE NUMBERS
- DeSchryver recorded her team-high 12 kills while adding 22 digs and two aces.
- Layson matched DeSchryver with 12 kills and added eight digs.
- Norris finished with 10 kills on .214 hitting and five total blocks.
- Kelly totaled 18 assists and six digs.
- Coffey posted five kills, five digs and one ace.
- Queens recorded 76 digs and 12 block assists along with two solo blocks.
- The Royals hit .206 in the second set, their best hitting percentage of the match.
POSTMATCH COMMENTS
"I think Charlotte did a good job of exploiting some of our weaknesses today. I don't think we came in prepared enough to defend out of system as well as we thought we were," head coach
Matt Stolz said. "We need to do a better job of siding out in tough moments and not giving up big runs for service from Charlotte. Looking forward to tomorrow where we play another crosstown rival in Davidson."
