CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Queens University of Charlotte women's volleyball battled No. 16 Tennessee on Tuesday night at Curry Arena, but the Lady Vols earned a 3-0 victory (25-14, 25-13, 25-18).
MATCH NOTES
- Elizabeth Layson led the Royals with 10 kills while hitting .227 and added six digs.
- Callie DeSchryver finished with seven kills, while Emma Norris added six kills and two block assists.
- Marlee Cook recorded 13 assists and Megan Kelly added 10 assists to lead the Queens offense.
- Queens finished the match with 30 kills and a .121 hitting percentage, while Tennessee recorded 43 kills and hit .344.
- The Royals saved their strongest offensive performance for the third set, hitting .182 compared to Tennessee's .143.
- Queens recorded 10 kills and committed just four attack errors in the third set.
- Tennessee finished with seven total blocks and eight service aces, while Queens recorded two blocks and did not record an ace.
First Set: Tennessee 25, Queens 14
Queens opened the match with an early 4-1 advantage behind kills from Elizabeth Layson and Emma Norris. Tennessee answered to take control of the set, building a 10-5 lead. The Royals continued to battle offensively, with Layson and Callie DeSchryver providing kills throughout the frame, but Tennessee maintained its advantage and closed the set 25-14.
Second Set: Tennessee 25, Queens 13
Tennessee took an early lead in the second set, moving ahead 9-4. Queens responded with kills from DeSchryver, Layson and Norris, but the Volunteers continued to control the attack and extended their advantage. Tennessee closed the set 25-13 to take a 2-0 match lead.
Third Set: Tennessee 25, Queens 18
Queens came out with its strongest offensive performance of the match, opening a 6-2 lead. The Royals continued to attack efficiently throughout the frame, out-hitting Tennessee .182 to .143 - Queens' only set hitting advantage of the night. Queens recorded 10 kills while committing just four attack errors in the set.
Tennessee eventually pulled even at 11-11, but Queens continued to battle and regained a 13-12 advantage. The Volunteers responded with a run to take a 19-14 lead before Queens fought back with kills from DeSchryver and Naomi Cole. Tennessee ultimately closed the set 25-18 to complete the 3-0 sweep.
POSTMATCH COMMENTS
"While the scores didn't go our way, I thought the team did a great job of fighting through and pushing them. Set three was definitely one of our best sets, out-hitting them and forcing them into some uncomfortable positions. So, really like the fight that this group had tonight. They did a great job of executing our scout. I think we have a fearless group that will go out there and compete with anyone, regardless of the score. I'm excited for hosting our crosstown rival on Thursday and Friday, so I'm looking forward to hopefully getting after it with some great defense and serving against Charlotte," said head coach Matt Stolz.
ROYAL RUNDOWN
Layson paced the Royals with 10 kills, while DeSchryver and Norris combined for 13. Cook and Kelly split setting duties with 13 and 10 assists, respectively, and Queens finished with 32 digs as a team.
