CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Queens University of Charlotte women's lacrosse team, seeded second in the
South Atlantic Conference Women's Lacrosse Championships, is scheduled to play third-seeded Catawba College on Friday, April 27 at 7 p.m. in Wingate, N.C., in the semifinal round of the Championships.
The Royals received a first-round bye to reach the semifinals after completing the regular season at 7-1 in SAC play. They clinched their second-place league finish with a 16-10 Senior Day win over Catawba on April 14.
Shannon Mansberger made the most of her Senior Day, scoring four goals and assisting on another.
Hanna Scott also tallied four goals, along with two assists, to tie
Katie Wardle (two goals, four assists) with a team-high six points.
Allison Conn and
Ally Blood chipped in with two goals apiece.
Queens closed its regular season on April 21 with an 11-2 road win over Wingate University. Conn,
Katy Miller, and
Ally Blood each scored two goals in the win. Miller also recorded one assist to total three points along with Mansberger who recorded two assists and one goal. On the defensive end,
Cammy Case tallied five ground balls and two caused turnovers along with three draw controls.
Chase Brokaw picked up the win between the pipes after recording 10 saves.
The Indians reached the semifinals after defeating Lincoln Memorial University, 18-10, in the quarterfinal round of the Championships. Brooklyn Tilley led with five goals and one assists while Katie Barth, Imani Grays, Julian Kurolvech, and Christina SanGiacomo each scored two goals. Gianna Pezzulo notched six assists in the win.
Scott leads the Royals this season with 72 points after totaling 44 goals and 28 assists. Wardle follows with 69 points on 36 goals and 33 assists. Blood has 37 points while
Taylor Quade and Conn follow with 32 and 31 points, respectively.
Defensively,
Chase Brokaw has started every game in goal for Queens to record 118 saves this season with a .452 save percentage. Case, a three-time AstroTurf SAC Defensive Player of the Year, anchors the Royals' defense with 63 caused turnovers and 71 ground balls. She leads the league in caused turnovers with Catawba's Imani Grays and Hannah Scott sitting second with 32 each. Case also leads the nation in caused turnovers per game (3.71).
Pezzulo leads the Indians with 71 points this season after recording 33 goals and 38 assists. Nicole Hunt has recorded 51 points with 31 goals and 22 assists. Erin Green has 49 (35 goals, 14 assists) points while Barth has 43 points (37 goals, 6 assists). Additionally, Tilly has 38 goals and four assists for 42 points. Madison Anselmo has recorded 144 saves this season with a .416 save percentage.
After not winning the regular season title for the first time since joining the SAC, the Royals will be looking to keep their championship streak alive. They enter the semifinals undefeated in SAC Championship play at 8-0. Queens faced the Indians in the semifinals in both 2014 and 2015 winning both seasons to advance to the championship finals. The Royals lead the all-time series with Catawba, 7-0.
Tomorrow's game will take place at Graham Gill Field on the campus of Wingate University. Both the semifinals and finals of the Championships will be hosted by Wingate University. The women's championship final is schedule for 4 p.m. on Sunday, April 29.
