MISENHEIMER, N.C. – The Queens University of Charlotte baseball team committed five errors on defense, leading to a 9-6 defeat at the hands of Pfeiffer University on Tuesday afternoon at Joe Ferebee Field.
The Falcons struck first with two runs the opening inning of play, taking advantage of two Queens fielding errors. The Royals were able to get a run back in the top of the second, as junior
Ryan Dudney drove in sophomore
Dominic Ford from third with a groundout to second base.
Both teams were scoreless through the third and fourth innings, but the Royals' offense came to life in the top of the fifth scoring four runs on four hits. Freshman
Noah Jones led off the inning with his first home run of the season to tie the score at 2-all.
Freshman
Wes Boling hit a one-out double and later scored on a sacrifice fly from fellow freshman
Austin Campbell, while
CJ Hammonds also had a double in the inning and scored on a two-run home run from Ford down the left field line.
However, the Falcons responded with five runs of their own in the bottom half of the fifth thanks in large part to a three-run home run from Kirby Lambert.
In the sixth, Pfeiffer took advantage of another Queens error to score two more runs and build a lead of 9-6. The Royals were able to plate a run in the top of the seventh as Boling drew a lead-off walk and eventually scored when Campbell was caught in a run down between first and second.
Queens had just one hit over the final two innings as two Pfeiffer relievers helped seal the win.
Junior
Kollin Schrenk (1-1) suffered his first loss of the year after allowing seven runs (six earned) on eight hits with two strikeouts. Freshman
Christian Huggins made his eighth relief appearance of the season and allowed two runs (one earned) on three hits with a strikeout across three innings of work.
Ford was 3-for-5 at the plate with his second home run of the year to go along with two runs, two RBI and two stolen bases. Boling drew three walks in the contest and finished 1-for-1 with two runs scored, while Jones was 1-for-4 with his first home run and an RBI.
