THE SHORT STORY
The Queens University of Charlotte baseball team, eyeing their first Atlantic Sun series sweep since 2023, led 2-0 through four innings, but Stetson University finally found a way to get to the Royals' pitching staff and hung crooked numbers in the fifth, sixth, and eighth innings to pull away for the 13-3 victory.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
-
Dylan Schaefer doubled to lead-off the third inning, then came in to score on an RBI single by
Grayson Childers.
- Later in the third inning,
Bradley Brown roped a single to left field and with the ball getting away from the Hatters' left fielder, Childers was able to come around to score to make it 2-0 for the Royals.
-
Jackson Gowan worked out of a couple of jams and did not allow a run while on the mound, but after issuing his third walk of the game, he was relieved after just three innings.
- Stetson got to the Queens bullpen in the fifth inning, loading the bases on two hit by pitches and a walk before four-consecutive RBI singles put the Royals behind for the first time all weekend, trailing 5-2 after five.
- Schaefer brought Queens back within two, ripping an RBI single to left field and scoring
Justin Hudson from third. Queens eventually had the go-ahead run at the plate with runners on second and third, but a strikeout ended the threat.
- Stetson again used a walk and two hit by pitches to load the bases, pushing across one run on a bases-loaded walk and a base-clearing double to put Queens in a 9-3 hole.
- The Hatters plated four runs in the eighth to take the Sunday matinee, 13-3.
Â
BY THE NUMBERS
-
Matthew Suppa threw out two Stetson would-be base-stealers, getting Yohann Dessureault at second base in the first inning and Juan DelaCruz in the seventh inning. Those were the 17
th and 18
th runners Suppa has caught stealing in his career, moving him to first all-time in Queens baseball history.
-
Grayson Childers picked up his team-leading 19
th RBI of the season and scored his 20
th run of the year.
-
Bradley Brown went 2-for-4, recording his fifth multi-hit game of the season and his first since March 10
th.
-
Justin Hudson and
Dylan Schaefer each had two-hit games as well, both doing that for the second time in 2026.
- The Royals out-hit Stetson, 11-10, but issued 14 free passes to the Hatters, 9 walks and 5 hit by pitches.
- Today was the first scoreless outing of the year for
Jackson Gowan, but it was also the third outing in his last six that did not go beyond three innings.
