THE SHORT STORY
The long ball and strong pitching led Queens University of Charlotte to its second shutout of the season and first in conference play this year, with a 2-0 win over Stetson University tonight on the road to open the three-game ASUN series. Â The Royals picked up their first conference shutout win in Division I in program history, and it is the team's third win and first on the road against Stetson in the program
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Both teams went hitless for the first three innings until Queens'
Anibal Rivera doubled to right field in the top of the fourth to break up the no-hitter.
- The Royals were the first to get on the board in the top of the sixth when Rivera connected for a two-run home run to deep right field that scored
Hunter Huneycutt. Huneycutt doubled before that with one down.
- Starting pitcher
Matthew Eagen did not allow a hit until the bottom of the sixth in the form of a double. For the first five innings, Stetson's only baserunners came in the form of walks.
- The Hatters' best chance of scoring came back in the bottom of the sixth when they were able to put runners on second and third with one out, but a groundout to the shortstop ended the threat.
Â
BY THE NUMBERS
- Queens out-hit Stetson 4 to 1.
- The Royals now have 15 home runs in their last 13 games.
- Both teams left three runners on base.
- Eagan finished the night throwing six scoreless innings, allowing one hit, three walks, and striking out five. The sophomore was one shy of tying his season-high back on March 27 against West Georgia. His performance tonight secured the win for him and moved him to 3-4 on the year.
- Reliever
Jake Young picked up his fourth save of the season. He fanned five over the course of three innings. His five strikeouts are a season-high for him. Breaking his previous season-high four back on April 2 against North Florida.Â
- Rivera paced all Royal hitters at the plate, going 3-for-4 with two RBIs, a home run, a double, and a run scored. This was his seventh multi-hit game of the season and his second three-hit game of the year. His home run was his third of the season to move him tied for third on the team with
Lenox Lively.
