SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Queens University of Charlotte men's and women's cross country teams completed their second straight sweep of the South Atlantic Conference Championships this morning at the Milliken Research Center located in Spartanburg, South Carolina. The men, ranked seventh nationally, had six runners finish in the top seven to claim their third title in the league while the women, ranked 21
st, had five runners finish in the top 10 to help them secure their third consecutive league title. Both teams currently sit atop the USTFCCCA's Southeast Region ranking as well.
In addition to winning both Championships, Queens head men's and women's cross country coach
Tom Scott was named Coach of the Year on both sides.
In the men's race, Queens'
Daniel Wallis was named SAC Runner of the Year after crossing the finish line first in 24:34.0.
Nick Kipkemei followed in third place in 24:55.8 while
Felix Wammetsberger (25:06.4) and
Anthony Raftis (25:07.5) completed the top five in fourth and fifth, respectively.
Jose Rosas clocked a time of 25:13.0 for sixth and
Elijah Inuwa claimed seventh place in 25:14.1. All six runners were named to the all-conference first team.
Seb Anthony was named to the second team by way of his 13
th place finish while
Erick Sanchez made the honorable mention team after placing 16
th. Both runners were also recognized on the SAC All-Freshman team.
Trey Carnevale also raced to take 73
rd.
"I'm super happy for both our squads," said Scott. "We executed the game plan perfectly. On the men's side, Danny had an amazing day winning the individual conference title. The rest of the squad crushed it as well."
Carissa Jenkins led the women racing to a second place finish in a personal best time of 22:09.6.
Natane Deruytter followed in third crossing the line in 22:21.2.
Mandi Moxie was fourth in 22:23.9 and
Lucie Noall was seventh in 22:44.0. All four runners earned spots on the all-conference first team.
Allyson Arellano (22:59.5) and
Zuzana Durcova (23:05.8) finished 10
th and 12
th, respectively, to earn second-team honors while
Aleksa Heeley (23:28.2) placed 17
th to claim a spot on the honorable mention team.
Gillian Kasitz,
Haley Schaeffer, and Gabriela lademarco also raced, placing 24
th, 28
th, and 43
rd.
"On the women's side we had a ton of lifetime bests," Scott added. "Carissa, Mandi, Allyson, Zuzka, Lexie, Haley, and Gabby all ran personal bests. It was a great day to be a Royal! Now it's time to get ready for our next test, the regional championships!"
Queens will set its focus on the NCAA DII Men's and Women's Cross Country Southeast Regional Championships scheduled for November 17. The races will take place in Oakwood, Ga.
