CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Queens University of Charlotte will face second-seeded Wingate University on Saturday, April 29 for the South Atlantic Conference Championship Tournament title after advancing on Thursday with a 10-9 overtime win over No. 5 Lenoir-Rhyne University. It will be the Royals' second year in a row playing for the title.
Fourth-seeded Queens defeated No. 5 Lenoir-Rhyne in overtime on Thursday thanks to a goal from
Duncan Smith with 2.5 seconds on the clock.
Eric Fitz led the Royals in the win with four goals, while
Justin Swick recorded a hat trick.
Jonathan Paige won 14-of-20 face-offs and totaled eight ground balls.
Griffin Stechmiller also totaled eight ground balls to go along with two caused turnovers.
Anthony Valenza completed play in the cage with 17 saves.
No. 11 Wingate defeated No. 20 Tusculum 8-7 in the semifinals to move on to the championship game. Jeremy Sullivan, Ryan Vogrig, and Wyatt Weiseman each scored two goals in the win. Weiseman also won 13-of-17 face-offs and totaled 10 ground balls. Goalkeeper Will Sheridan recorded seven saves in goal.
Queens took the regular season game against the Bulldogs winning 9-8 on March 29.
Reed Murphy,
Laszlo Henning, and Swick each scored two goals for the Royals, while
Garrett Sadler,
Nick Sawyer and Smith notched one goal each.
Queens outshot the Bulldogs 41-27, putting 23 shots on goal to Wingate's 20. The Royals also totaled 37 ground balls to Wingate's 20. Paige won 19-of-21 face-offs and grabbed 15 ground balls.
Wingate was led by Daniel Godwin and Alex Llerandi who each scored two goals. Sheridan took the loss in the cage after totaling 14 saves.
The SAC Championship Title is scheduled to take place on Saturday at 2 p.m.
