HARROGATE, Tenn.- The Queens University of Charlotte women's basketball team made history on Saturday, February 25, 2017, earning a spot in the 2017 South Atlantic Conference Championships for the first time in program history. The Royals will be featured in a quarterfinal matchup against the No. 11 ranked Lincoln Memorial Railsplitters on Wednesday, March 1, at 6 p.m.
"As a coach, nothing compares to seeing pure joy on the faces of your players," said Head Coach
Sarah Jansen. "Our seniors wanted the first ever SAC Tournament berth so they could leave a legacy on the program. We will enjoy this moment as we continue to intentionally create a brand that will make Queens University and our alumni proud."
In addition to making the SAC tournament for the first time since the Royals joined the conference in the fall of 2013, the advancement marks the first postseason appearance since the 2012-2013 season. Queens faced Pfeiffer University that year in a quarterfinal game for the 2013 Conference Carolinas Basketball Tournament.
The Royals advanced into the 2017 SAC Championships after an exciting last second layup from
Maggie Stewart in the team's regular season closer. As time expired, Stewart forced a layup, off of a through pass from
Sarah Henson, to avoid overtime and take the victory against Tusculum. The back-and-forth tussle with the Pioneers gave Stewart 13 points while Henson led the team with 14 points alongside
Mendy McNeese, who also tallied 14 points during the game.
Queens enters the tournament as the eighth seed taking on the Railsplitters for the third time this season. Although Queens dropped in both games, the Royals forced LMU to use their steady shooting from the line to avoid the upset in the first meeting of the year. The January 9
th matchup held just a four point difference into the final two minutes of play with Queens forcing LMU to make shots from the line for the win. The 10 point difference (70-60) came after LMU made six of six free-throws.
The Royals (5-22) will take the floor at No. 11 Lincoln Memorial (24-3) tomorrow night at 6 p.m.
