CHARLOTTE, N.C. – After completing the regular season with a 3-4-3 South Atlantic Conference record the Queens University of Charlotte men's soccer team will travel to second-seeded Carson-Newman College (9-6-2, 6-2-2) for the quarterfinal round of the
SAC Men's Soccer Championships as the No. 7 seed.
The Royals enter the game with a 7-5-4 overall record after closing the regular season with a 2-1 win at No. 17 Lander.
Juan Carlos Carrillo scored the golden goal in the 100
th minute to help lift Queens past the Bearcats.
Leading the Royals this season is junior forward
Edmundo Robinson. Robinson has 24 points this season after totaling 11 goals and two assists. Additionally, he has scored a season-high two goals in three games and recorded two game-winners.
Keegan Burton trails with 10 points on four goals and two assists, while
Juan Carlos Carrillo has seven points on a pair of goals and three assists.
Though Carson-Neman and Lenoir-Rhyne finished with identical conference records, the Eagles earned the No. 2 seed thanks to a regular season win over the Bears. Carson-Newman has not collected a win since Oct. 7 when they defeated Catawba, 3-0. They then lost a pair of games before playing to a draw with Tusculum, and ultimately fell in their final three matches of the regular season. With point leader Tobias Solem Karlsen out, Tom Read has led the Eagles recording 10 goals and three assists for 23 points. Ashley Kelynack adds 11 points.
The matchup will be the second at Carson-Newman this season as the Royals fell in the regular season to the Eagles on Sept. 23 by a score of 2-0. The Royals have only lost two matches since that time.
Neither team advanced to the 2016 SAC Men's Soccer Championships. The last championship game for each team was during the 2015 semifinals when the Royals and Eagles battled to a 3-3 tie at the end of both overtime periods forcing a penalty kick shootout. Queens took the shootout win, 5-4, advancing to the finals where they fell, 2-0, to Wingate.
