Royals Results in the Olympic Games

Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. –Queens University of Charlotte athletes completed their events in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, this afternoon as Patricia Castro-Ortega concluded her week with the 4x200 meter freestyle relay.

Swimming second on the Spanish team, Castro-Ortega pushed her way to the wall with a time of 1:59.91. Her swim was the fastest 200 meter split for Spain as she looked to keep hopes alive for the finals. Unfortunately, the team would miss the qualifying mark, finishing the competition in 16th place after securing a time of 8:03.74.

The finals for the event will be held tonight at 10:22 p.m.
 
Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. – In a first for the Queens University of Charlotte Department of Athletics, the Royals saw an athlete compete in the finals of an Olympic competition. Dion Dreesens, a swimmer at Queens, led his home country of the Netherlands to a seventh overall finish in the 4x200 meter freestyle relay, swimming the first stretch of the event.

Dreesens, with a faster swim from start to finish, dropped his overall split time to a 1:47.58 from his team's qualifying performance during the morning competition. His 200 meter split of 1:47.86 in the qualifying round, along with teammates Maarten Brzoskowski, Kyle Stolk, and Sebastiann Verschuren, respectively, landed the Netherlands at eighth in the final heat. The four athletes would drop to a 7:09.16 to move up a spot in the final rankings.  

The United States of America's relay team of Conor Dwyer, Francis Haas, Ryan Lochte, and Michael Phelps, respectively, claimed gold  touching with a time of 7:00.66.

Patricia Castro-Ortega will be the last Royal to compete in the competition. She swims tomorrow, August 10, with the Spanish 4x200 meter relay team at 1:31 p.m.
 

Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. – Queens University of Charlotte will see their first athlete in contention for an Olympic medal as Dion Dreesens competes in the finals of the men's 4x200 meter freestyle relay. Dreesens swam the first leg of the event during the seeded heats on Tuesday, August 9, 2016, touching the wall with a 1:47.86 split.

The Netherlands finished the race in second place behind the United States of America who clocked a 7:06.74. Despite the second place finish as a group, six relay teams from heat two would find qualifying times. The team enters tonight's race as the eighth seed with an overall time of 7:09.16.

The finals for the relay will be held at 10:38 p.m., tonight.
 
Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. – The third day of the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, provided Patricia Castro-Ortega with a chance to compete in her first ever individual event in the Games. Castro-Ortega earned a spot with the Spanish team in the 200 meter freestyle as she drove off the blocks mid-day Monday for the event.

A contender for her heat during the opening half of the race, Castro-Ortega touched the wall with a 2:00.71 at the end of four laps. Her time would post 34th overall out of 42 competitors in the competition.

Her last event of the Games will be on Wednesday, August 10, at 1:31 p.m., as she battles with the Spanish 4x200 meter freestyle relay team. 
 
Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. – After day two of the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Queens has seen two athletes make their appearance in the international competition. Patricia Castro-Ortega swam on the opening day with the Spanish 4x100 meter freestyle relay team while Dion Dreesens clocked a finish in the men's 200 meter freestyle race to complete the event for the Netherlands during Sunday's competition.

Castro-Ortega, with her Spanish teammates, powered to the wall with a 3:40.46 to improve off their entry time of 3:40.64. She took the third leg of the relay, reaching for a split time of 55.08 as Spain claimed 13th overall. Australia earned the gold medal for the event with a time of 3:32.39 clocking a new world record.

Dreesens completed his swim in the 200 meter freestyle on August 7, touching for 27th place overall. His time of 1:47.76 landed him seventh in his heat. He competed against 47 competitors from around the world. The semifinals for the event will be held later today with finals occurring on Monday at 9:21 p.m.

Castro-Ortega will compete tomorrow in the women's 200 meter freestyle around 12 p.m. Dreesens will head back to the water on Tuesday for the 4x200 meter freestyle relay.
