No. 13 Queens On to Round Two with Win Over No. 6 Mercyhurst

ST. CHARLES, Mo. – The Queens University of Charlotte women's lacrosse team, ranked 13th in the nation, continued making history today defeating No. 6 Mercyhurst University this evening in the opening round of the NCAA Division II Women's Lacrosse Championships to move on to the second round. The Royals topped the Lakers, 12-9, to improve to 18-2 on the year, and pick up their first NCAA Championship win in program history. Mercyhurst closes their season at 17-3.
 
Alexandra Bruder and Brittany Larranaga led the Royals with four goals apiece this evening, while Shannon Mansberger added a hat trick. Hanna Scott totaled three assists, and Sarah Bell chipped in with a goal. Christine Wiese took the win in goal after recording seven saves.
 
The Royals took advantage of their free position shot opportunities today scoring half of their points on free position shots. They would capitalize on four opportunities in the opening half to eventually head into the break with a 5-4 lead over the Lakers.
 
Queens then went on a 5-0 run in the second half to lead 10-5 with 10:07 left to play. The Royals defense then stepped up to hold off Mercyhurst's comeback efforts only allowing them to get within two before the final horn sounded.
 
Queens edged Mercyhurst in shots, 22-21, putting 18 shots on goal. The Royals also forced the Lakers into making 17 turnovers.
 
Olivia Keirn led the Lakers with three goals, while Kristin Anderson and Janelle Williams tallied two goals apiece. Goalkeeper Gabby Gravino totaled six saves in the loss.
 
The Royals will move on to face No. 4 Lindenwood University tomorrow at 5 p.m. central time (6 p.m. eastern).The Lions went undefeated in conference play before defeating Regis 9-8 in the RMAC Championship. They are 16-2 on the year led by Allison Hurley who has 63 points this season after totaling 31 goals and 32 assists. Rachel Benzing has 55 points on 27 goals and 28 assists.
