Box Score CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Queens University of Charlotte men's lacrosse team's comeback effort fell short this afternoon in the 2016 South Atlantic Conference Men's Lacrosse Championship as they were defeated 10-9 by the No. 16 Lenoir-Rhyne Bears. Queens, ranked 20
th in the nation, now holds a record of 11-7 on the year, while Lenoir-Rhyne improves to 12-4.
Trailing 9-3 with 6:26 to play in the third, Queens would use a 4-0 run to pull within one of the Bears, 8-7, heading into the final 15 minutes of play. Lenoir-Rhyne would score the first two goals of the fourth to increase their lead to three, 10-7, with 6:57 to play, but Queens did not back down.
Spencer Corkery would put a ball in the back of the net at 1:23 to close the gap to two, and
Nick Carlson followed with another making it a one point game once again at 10-9. Unfortunately for Queens, the Bears would win the final face-off of the day and hold the ball until the final horn sounded.
Queens found themselves trailing Lenoir-Rhyne, 5-2, at halftime of today's game after getting off to a slow start offensively. The Bears would put three points on the board in the opening period before Queens got on the board with two seconds on the clock.
Nick Carlson would be credited with the unassisted goal.
Jack Smith scored the Royals' second goal of the half after the Bears went ahead 4-1, responding with one for Queens at 12:57 in the second period. Lenoir-Rhyne's Carson Sterling would answer adding another goal for the Bears at 7:51 to make the score 5-2 heading into the break.
Queens was edged in shots 43-42 this afternoon, putting 20 shots on goal to Lenoir-Rhyne's 21. The Royals won the battle for ground balls 30-22, and won 16-of-23 face-offs.
Eric Dolan completed the game with 11 saves.
Carlson led the Royals with a hat trick, while Sadler totaled two goals and one assist.
Vincent Valenza tallied two assists, while
Jesse Oliver added one goal and one assist. Ryan Crompton had 11 saves for the win.
Jonathan Paige totaled 10 ground balls after winning 16-of-21 face-offs.
Will Remsen, Taylor Thilo and Sterling each recorded hat tricks for Lenoir-Rhyne
