Box Score 2 Hartsville, S.C.- The Queens University of Charlotte softball team (24-26) found a spot in tomorrow's play of the South Atlantic Conference Championships after defeating Lincoln Memorial, 3-2, in an elimination game on Friday, April 29, 2016. A single by
Lyndey McCurry allowed the team to score the winning run of the game in the bottom of the seventh to claim the victory and drop LMU to a 24-28 overall record.
Queens'
Ashton Whitaker helped the Royals put the first run on the board, finding an open spot in right field to bring home
Sydney Ditto and advance
Taylor Cheek to third base.
Kayla Hall sent a sacrifice fly into left field to score Cheek and make it a 2-0 game in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Despite the scoreless opening to the game, LMU found an immediate answer in their next team at bat with a two-run homerun from Allie Jones to level the score back at 2-2.
As the game moved into the bottom of the seventh,
Brooke Sanford had a lead-off single to help the Royals put the pieces into place. In the next at bat, an error by the LMU pitcher allowed
Samantha Martinez and Sanford to both hold bases with no outs. McCurry's at bat would come next in the order as she placed a ball deep into center field allowing Sanford enough time to round the bases from second, scoring the winning run of the day.
Evie Scott (11-13) tabbed the win for the team coming in for the last two outs of the game, holding the Railsplitters to just one hit. McCurry would pitch the first 6.1 innings of the game with seven hits and two runs.
Brianna Taylor (9-7) would suffer the loss coming in for the seventh inning of the game to suffer two hits and the run from Sanford. Samantha Smith started the day going through six innings with six hits and two runs.
Earlier in the day, Queens would suffer a loss to the second seeded team in the tournament, Catawba (36-13). Although the Royals started the day with solo runs in the first two-innings, Catawba scored a pair in the bottom of their first at bat for an even game through four innings of play. A homerun by Hall and an unearned run by Ditto put the team in the lead, but the Indians tabbed seven runs in the bottom of the inning to move ahead 9-4. The score held steady for the remainder of the game.
Carley Tysinger (29-8) tabbed the win as the lone pitcher for the Indians. She saw seven hits and two earned runs during the day.
Scott suffered the loss coming in as the relief pitcher for McCurry. Scott saw three innings with five hits and four runs.
Catelyn Presley finished the remaining 2.2 innings with five hits and three runs.
Queens will face the winner of the game between Wingate and Carson-Newman tomorrow afternoon at 12 p.m.
