Box Score CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Queens University of Charlotte men's lacrosse team, ranked 20
th in the nation, defeated Catawba College this afternoon by a score of 13-5 in the quarterfinal round of the South Atlantic Conference Men's Lacrosse Championship. The Royals, seeded third in tournament play, now sit at 10-6 on the year, while Catawba, seeded sixth, ends their season at 5-10.
Garrett Sadler led the Royals with four goals, while
Garrett Chan added one goal and three assists.
Spencer Corkery totaled two goals and one assist, while
Max Morgan and
Jack Smith chipped in with one goal and one assist each.
Eric Dolan completed play in goal with 19 saves.
Queens quickly found themselves with a 3-0 lead in the first quarter following three unassisted goals. They would also hold the Indians scoreless until 3:25 when Connor Kennedy found the back of the net to make the score 3-1 heading into the second. Queens then responded with four unanswered goals to head into the break with a 7-1 lead. Sadler scored all four of his goals in the opening half.
Catawba's Liam Lynch tried to get his team back in the game in the third, putting two goals on the board during the period, but Queens would score three to hold a 10-3 advantage heading into the final 15 minutes of play. Corkery then opened the final quarter with back-to-back scores to increase the Royals' lead to nine, 12-3, as Queens held the Indians to just two more goals in the game.
Queens was outshot 47-45 by the Indians this afternoon, though they put 28 shots on goal to Catawba's 25. The Royals also won the battle for ground balls 29-21.
Lynch led the Indians with two goals on the day. Ryan Applegate totaled 15 saves in the net.
The Royals will face second seeded Wingate University on Thursday at 6:30 p.m., at the Queens Sports Complex in the SAC Championship Semifinals.
