Box Score 2 Charlotte, N.C- In a double-header series against the No. 19-ranked team in the nation, the Queens University of Charlotte softball team suffered a pair of losses to the Lenoir-Rhyne Bears on Wednesday, April 20, 2016. The first game saw a score of 12-4 while the second game reached 14-5 to push the Royals to a 20-25 overall record and a 9-11 South Atlantic Conference record. Lenoir-Rhyne concluded the day with an overall record of 41-9 and a SAC record of 18-2.
It was Lenoir-Rhyne, in the first game, who slowly built up an 8-0 lead before Queens could respond. The team led-off with a sacrifice fly in inning one in addition to adding two runs and a solo homerun in the third to make it a 4-0 game. Continuing to put runs on the board, the Bears added solo runs in the fourth and fifth innings. In the sixth at bat, Erin Boone brought home Dakota Keller on a double before Boone reached home plate off a single into right field to add two runs to the day.
Queens finally found some rhythm in the bottom of the sixth starting with a
Jasmyn Lindsay single to score
Taylor Rosenbalm.
Hanna Hasker's hit to the shortstop provided enough time for
Samantha Martinez to escape home as
Lyndey McCurry blasted one into center field to score both
Taylor Cheek and
Brooke Sanford.
The four run inning would be cancelled out as the Bears placed four runs in the seventh to end the game at 12-4.
Evie Scott suffered the loss as she pitched 2.1 innings with four runs and four hits. McCurry came in for the remaining 4.2 innings of play with seven hits and eight runs.
Maryann Hoskins tabbed the win ending the game with a 15-6 record. She would pitch for five complete innings to see four runs and one hit.
Errors provided a problem for the Royals as they saw three in the first inning to produce four runs on the board of game two. The Bears only added in their next at bat with a three-run homerun in the second inning to make it a 7-0 game. With two runs in the third and five runs in the fifth, Queens was soon looking at a 14-0 deficit. Not going down without a fight,
Ashton Whitaker scored off a fielding error just moments before a
Kayla Hall smashed a ball over the right center field wall with bases loaded. The homerun would be the last scoring play of the day.
Catelyn Presley would start the game and return close. She would pitch a total of 4.1 innings with 13 hits and nine runs. Scott saw 0.2 innings with four hits and five runs.
Lenoir-Rhyne would use four different pitchers during the game, staring with Hoskins in the first two-innings with no hits and no runs. Emily Kenley tabbed the win as she came in during the third inning with no hits and no runs. Ty Triplett was the pitcher for just one out, seeing two hits and five runs while Brandi Parks concluded the 1.2 remaining innings with no hits and no runs.
The last regular season series of the year will be held on Saturday, April 23, as the team heads to Brevard. The game starts at 1 p.m.
