Box Score MOUNT OLIVE, N.C. – The Queens University of Charlotte men's lacrosse team, ranked 19
th in the nation, faced-off against No. 7 University of Mount Olive this evening falling 14-8 in the nonconference game. The loss gives the Royals a 9-6 overall record to close the regular season, while the Trojans improve to 12-2 on the year.
The Royals were led by
Garrett Chan,
Spencer Corkery and
Gavin Perry who each netted two goals on the night. Chan also tallied an assist to bring his point total to three.
Jonathan Paige won 10-of-13 face-offs and totaled eight ground balls, while
Nick Capriglione won 8-of-13 and grabbed three ground balls.
Eric Dolan took the loss in goal after recording nine saves.
Though Queens opened with the first score of the night, they would find themselves trailing 2-1 thanks to back-to-back goals from the Trojans. The Royals'
Griffin Stechmiller would knot the game at 2-2 with a goal at 10:25 in the first, but three unanswered goals from the Trojans in response would put Mount Olive ahead 5-2. A goal from Corkery with 27 seconds to play in the quarter would make the score 5-3 heading into the second.
Mount Olive was able to keep their two goal lead at the halftime break after matching both of Queens' goals in the second period. They would lead the Royals 7-5 at the half.
Outscoring Queens 3-1 in the third, the Trojans held a 10-6 lead heading into the fourth where a goal from Chan 5:49 would cut the Trojans' lead to three. However, the Trojans once again found three goals in a row in the final minutes of play to take the six point win.
Queens was outshot 43-28, though the Royals put 19 shots on goal compared to 23 shots on frame for the Trojans. The Royals were also edged in ground balls, 28-26.
Nico Shewey led Mount Olive this evening with four goals, while three others scored two goals apiece.
The Royals will now wait to see who they will face in the quarterfinal round of the South Atlantic Conference Championship at home on Tuesday, April 26.
