Box Score 2 Greenwood, S.C. –The Queens University of Charlotte softball team dropped a pair of games to Lander University on Tuesday, March 8, 2016. The Royals would fall 6-5 in the first game before dropping 4-1 in game two.
Queens opened the day with a scoring run from
Taylor Rosenbalm who raced from second base home off a triple from
Lyndey McCurry. Lander answered with a run of their own in the bottom of the first before adding one more run in the bottom of the second to take a 2-1 lead.
Queens would regain the game, scoring two runs from McCurry and Rosenbalm in the third inning off a throwing error from the Bearcats third basemen. The team would extend to a 4-2 lead with the help of
Samantha Martinez who hit a double out into left field for
Taylor Cheek to touch home plate.
The lead would be short lived as Lander responded with four runs in the bottom of the fourth to take a two run gap over the Royals.
Sydney Ditto moved Martinez home in the last inning to bring the team one step closer but the Royals would fall shy off a double play from the second basemen, Destiny Clyde, and the catcher, Kelli McCormack.
Evie Scott was the starting pitcher for the team, going 3.2 innings with one run and two hits. McCurry came in as the relief pitcher, ultimately suffering the loss for a 6-4 pitching record. McCurry pitched 2.1 innings with five runs and six hits.
Lexi Griffin (2-4) took the win for the Bearcats, pitching six complete innings for five runs and seven hits. McKenzi Ferguson secured the save for the team coming in to pitch in the seventh inning.
Not finished from game one, Lander quickly jumped out to a 2-0 lead finding scoring plays in the first and second inning.
Abby Lathan tallied a run on the board for Queens, hitting a homerun over the left field wall. She would be the only run for the Royals during the game. Lander concluded the day with Dariean Ward finding a run in both the third and sixth inning to put the team ahead 4-1.
Catelyn Presley went all six innings for the team to fall to a 2-4 pitching record. She gave up four runs and seven hits.
Ferguson was the lone pitcher for the Bearcats, giving up four hits and one run.
Queens will face Francis Marion at home on March 16
th for a double-header at 2 p.m. and 4 p.m.
