Box Score WINGATE, N.C. – The Queens University of Charlotte men's lacrosse team, ranked 12
th in the nation, was upset this evening in a South Atlantic Conference showdown with Wingate University. The Royals fell 9-8 bringing their overall record to 7-4 on the year and their league record to 4-1. The Bulldogs improve to 7-5 on the season and 4-1 in the SAC with the win.
After jumping out to a 6-1 lead in the opening quarter of action, the Royals were held scoreless in the second period. They would hold a 6-4 lead heading into the break.
In the second half the Bulldogs, having cut Queens' lead to one, 6-5, by the end of the third quarter, would knot the game at 7-7 with 12:43 to play in the fourth. Wingate then put two more balls in the back of the net to lead 9-7with 4:27 on the clock. A goal from Queens'
Spencer Corkery would come late in the fourth to bring the Royals back within one, but their comeback efforts would fall short as time ticked off the clock.
Queens outshot the Bulldogs 41-38 this evening, putting 30 shots on goal. The Royals also totaled 43 ground balls to Wingate's 30 and won 14 of the 19 face-offs. Corkery led the Royals with four goals, while
Eric Dolan registered 13 saves in the loss.
Alex Llerandi recorded a hat trick for the Bulldogs, while Seth Grimwood and Ryan Ormerod scored two goals apiece. Jacob Ormerod totaled 22 saves in the net.
The Royals are back in action at home on Saturday for Senior Day at 3 p.m. when they welcome Tusculum College to Dickson Field.
