Walk-off Homerun Gives Queens the Sweep over Belmont Abbey

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Charlotte, N.C. - Tallying two wins, the Queens University of Charlotte softball team (7-9) swept the Crusaders of Belmont Abbey (4-12) on Wednesday, March 2, 2016. Queens dominated the first matchup holding a 10-4 score at the conclusion of the game. The second meeting was decided by a walk-off two-run homerun from Hanna Hasker who blasted one over the left field wall.

It was a high scoring game to start the day as a combined six homeruns were seen throughout the seven innings. Queens opened the scoring with a two-run homerun from Elaina Frantellizzi to bring Lyndey McCurry home with her. McCurry followed with a double in the second inning to bring in two more runs from Taylor Rosenbalm and Sydney Ditto. The third and fourth innings each had a ball reach over the wall as Belmont Abbey's Mackenzie Dziendziel homered in the bottom of the third and McCurry homered in the top of the fourth.

Frantellizzi would score a few plays later off a wild pitch in addition to a two-RBI hit from Brooke Sanford to see Abby Lathan and Jasmyn Lindsay make their way home.

Despite an 8-1 lead by Queens, Belmont Abbey refused to quit seeing back-to-back innings with one-run homeruns. Queens headed into the bottom of the sixth with an 8-3 lead.

Lathan would again find her way to the plate as Ditto laid down a perfectly placed bunt. Kayla Hall would be the last run to score for the Royals taking off after Rosenbalm found room down the left side of the field.

Dziendziel found one last homerun for the Crusaders to close out the game.

Queens was led by Frantellizzi who tallied four hits in the game including a homerun and two doubles. McCurry pitched all seven innings to take the win and move to a 4-3 record. She saw five hits, four runs, and three strikeouts.

Belmont Abbey used three pitchers during the game as Samantha Jacobs took the team loss for a 2-4 record. She pitched for the opening two innings of the game for five hits, four runs and two strikeouts. Alyssa Buell pitched for 1.1 inning to give up one run and one hit. Shannan Mas finished the remaining two innings with five runs and six hits.

The start of game two was Queens' favor as the Royals reached a 4-0 lead by the third inning. The scoring started with a sacrifice fly from Frantellizzi in the first inning to move Ditto around to score. The team would follow with homeruns in both the second and third inning. Lathan grabbed a one-run homerun in the second before Frantellizzi hit her second homerun of the day with McCurry standing on base.

Belmont Abbey would begin a slow climb in the third inning to eventually gain the lead. The build for the Crusaders started with a sacrifice fly from Dziendziel who batted in Selena Thompson before Alexis Pereiro found a chance to reach home off a wild pitch.

Belmont Abbey pulled within one in the top of the seventh as Pereiro reached off a double from Brooke Pegram. However, the damage was not done as a two-run homerun from McPeak flipped the game in favor of the Crusaders.

With pressure on, Rosenbalm had a leadoff double to reach scoring position, looking to be brought home. Hasker would seize the opportunity, hitting one out of the park to win the game with two outs.

Evie Scott (1-3) took the win for the team coming in as the relief pitcher. She pitched 2.2 innings for five hits and three runs. Catelyn Presley started for the team, seeing her way through 4.1 innings for four hits and two runs.

Amelia Saldivar (1-3) took the loss going just 2.0 innings as the starting pitcher with four runs and three hits. Peyton Wilson was the next pitcher up with 3.0 innings for three hits and no runs while Samantha Jacobs closed the remaining 1.2 innings for two runs and four hits.

The Royals will hit the road this weekend to compete in the Shaw Tournament. The team will compete against five teams over three days, starting with Bowie State on Friday, March 4th, at 3 p.m.
