Box Score LAKELAND, Fla. – The Queens University of Charlotte men's lacrosse team, ranked 20
th in the nation, opened their 2016 season this afternoon with a 12-6 win over Florida Southern College.
The Royals built their lead over the Mocs in the opening quarter after scoring three unanswered goals in the opening three minutes. Florida Southern capitalized on a man-up opportunity for their first score at 10:24 and another would follow bringing them to within one, 3-2, of Queens with 6:23 to play in the period. However, a pair of goals from
Spencer Corkery would put the Royals ahead 5-2 heading into the second.
Garrett Sadler found his second goal of the day at 11:03 in the second quarter to give the Royals a 6-2 lead, but the Mocs soon answered finding the back of the net twice before the halftime break to head into the locker room trailing by just two goals, 6-2.
Though ending the half scoreless following the Mocs' two goals, Queens came out of the break with all the momentum putting four more points on the board in the third to secure their win. The defense then held Florida Southern to just two more goals in the fourth as the Royals walked away victorious in their season opener.
Sadler completed the game with four goals to lead Queens in scoring, while
Garrett Chan finished with two goals and four assists to lead with eight points.
Vincent Valenza and Corkery added two goals apiece, while
Jonathan Paige and Jesse Olliver chipped in with one goal each. Paige continued where he left off last season dominating the face-off with 14 wins out of 16. He also totaled nine ground balls.
Eric Dolan totaled 10 saves and five ground balls on the day.
Cody Dyer led the Mocs with two goals, while Matt Lalli recorded 10 saves in the loss.
The Royals will have their home opener on Saturday, February 13 against Alderson Broaddus University at 11 a.m.
