Box Score 2 Charlotte, N.C. - The Queens University of Charlotte softball team (2-4) swept the Bobcats of Lees-McRae College (1-5) on Saturday, February 6, 2016. The Royals secured the game 1 win with a 6-1 score before blanking the Bobcats in game to with a 6-0 score for a double-header sweep.
Samantha Martinez started the momentum for the Royals in the third inning. She singled to right center field, scoring
Brooke Sanford on the play.
Venus Gonzalez kept the hits coming as she, too, singled into right center field. She advanced
Lyndey McCurry to second base, allowing Martinez to score. Bobcats pitcher, Kara Cunningham then balked on a pitch sending
Abby Lathan to first base, Gonzalez to third base, and McCurry was sent to home for a total of three runs in the inning. However, Queens did not stop there as
Brooke Sanford singled to the left side and Martinez singled to left-center for a combination of two RBI's scoring
Taylor Cheek and
Taylor Rosenbalm. The Royals last efforts came in the fifth inning as Lathan reached first base on an error by the Bobcats shortstop and McCurry scored the unearned run. The Lees-McRae Bobcats' lone run of the game came in the seventh inning as Emily Merriam singled to the left side bringing home Brea Lawson. McCurry managed to hold the Bobcats, only giving up four hits in the last two innings of play.
Game two was off to a quick start as McCurry doubled through the left side of the field, scoring Rosenbalm and
Sydney Ditto for a two-run RBI. The second and third innings were quiet for both teams, but the Royals picked up the pace yet again in the fourth inning. Martinez singled out to center field and then advanced to second on the throw.
Jasmyn Lindsay scored on the play. Shortly after Rosenbalm singled through the right side, scoring two more runs for the Royals. Rosenbalm then stole second, scoring
Sydney Ditto on the play. The Royals tallied nine hits throughout the game, scoring six runs. The Bobcats tallied six hits but were unable to put any runs on the board.
The Royals used two pitchers throughout the series.
Lyndey McCurry (1-2) posted the first game win, totaling six strikeouts and one walk.
Catelyn Presley (1-1) threw game two for the Royals, throwing all seven innings and tallying one strikeout.
The Bobcats used two pitchers in the first game as well. Kara Cunningham (0-3) and Taylor Billings combined for a total of four strikeouts and four walks. Game two was pitched by Charlie Dutton (1-2) who tallied five strikeouts and only one walk through seven innings.
The Queens University of Charlotte softball team will return to Park Road Park in Charlotte, N.C., on Sunday, February 14, as they take on the Hawks of Chowan University. This will be a double-header series with the start times of 12 p.m. and 2 p.m.
